I got a degree in finance thinking I would hit it big and I cannot even get a good job. I just got offered a job at a credit union for 27k. Fuck, I cannot break the 30k mark let alone 80k+. I was thinking a masters is what I need. But is it? I don't want to get out owing more money just to have someone offer me a job for 28k. I was thinking a masters in accounting combined with a bachelors in finance might be a good combo. Input?
Please give me some insight on being succesful with a career.

The best piece of advice I can give is to be patient, work hard and keep an open mind. Sometimes you have to tough out the shit positions to work your way up to a more desirable position. Oh, and don't judge the value of a job by the salary, sometimes the experience is more valuable than the pay.

I got an acounting job with a huge corporation in CT a couple years ago. I never went to college and they started me at 31K. So I don't think schooling is the most important thing, it's finding the right company, and finessing your way into it. I elaborated on my resume a little and just made sure I could back up my BS. It probably wouldn't work for any company, but the one I was working at was growing so fast, they where hiring people left and right, educated or not.
I agree with what velvett said about the experience being more important than the salary in the beginning. You can always build off your experience and negotiate for higher pay a couple years down the road.

how long ago did you get out of school? Start applying to Banks and Corporations all over the country. Be willing to move to another part of the country if the jobs are springing up where you live now.

Dude, come to Arizona, there are tons of jobs for finance people.
The biggest thing I can tell is you have to take chances. Don't play it safe all the time. If you really want to be successfull (as in lots o cash) Take a risk, the biggest one your balss will let you. If you never take a chance, you will find yourself one day saying, "if only" or "what if" The two worst things a dying man could have to say.

For your own sake, do what makes you happy. Please. I can;t speak for you, but I don't know many who find accounting to be fun. Bachelor's in Finance is a dime a dozen unless you went to Wharton. (No flame)

Don't even think about a MA in accounting unless you're planning on teaching. If that's the field you want to work in, get a CPA license. I'd give you mine but they're non-transferable. he he he

I found this out the hard way. I hated accounting. Now, at my ridiculously old age, I'm back in school to do something that actually interests me.

Lot's of good advice. The only reason I said accounting is because I figure with an accounting degree I could weasel my way into a cool company such as a firearms manufacturer etc. Maybe I should pursue art. i like to paint wildlife. May1010, your advice is always appreciated (even though we disagree on what gender is hotter)

i just quit my master's in art because i looked around and went...... whoa! lots of crazies in here... i don't think i fit into this crowd. i realised i cannot exist in that field because i will never be accepted and i actually do not wish to be accepted anymore.
so i'm taking a post-degree certificate in visual communications in the fall for the next year, and then i have no idea where life will lead me. sure, i'm afraid of not liking this field too, but at least i've given it a shot. at least i know i don't want that for myself.
i want to find something that makes me happy, not something that pays ok but makes me crazy. sorry for the rant.

Small - were ya a little distressed that they took it oh so seriously????? Those people really crack me up!!!! I think you will find commercial work much more fulfilling or at least you can be honest about it. For me I can now say "I squished some clay around, ya sold a million dollars worth of reproductions now where is my fucking check?????" The problem with those artsy fartsy types is that they are usually lacking in $$$$ for what they do so they make up for it in arrogance.
To the original question - you have to love what you do, it takes extreme dedication and if you aren't loving it you won't get there and you have to pay your dues which means alot of years working for shit wages. I personally think self employment is the only way to go but that takes alot of years of no life and no money but the payoff is much greater.

If you want big $, you have to go where there is big $ to be made. NY and Chicago are two places where there's some serious dough floating around. You could trade w/your degree. My old roomate didn't even graduate and started trading. Now he' been out for 2 years and flirting with $75k a year. I know there's some exchanges out in CA. For some reason, San Francisco comes to mind, but I may be wrong.

In response to the last post, I lived in San Francisco from '93 through Feb '01. I'm a CPA and have an M.B.A. I made $120,000 per year. Impossible to buy even a modest home/condo in SF on $120,000. I love the city but I'm glad I'm doing something new.
