planting trees

question for you homeowners out there. i want to plant two trees, both plum trees.

september is the hottest month of the year in southen CA, AND the trees will be facing west which gets the most sun and the highest temps of the day. (btw this labor day weekend is typical san diego late summer, in the 90s and humid).

is it best to plant trees when it is cooler out for young trees to survive? dont want to waste my time and money.

Now is about right....you want them to just have time to put out new root growth and then go dormant. What kind of plum are they? I have some that are over 30 ft tall!

decorative plums. they are very useful in southern CA landscaping because they dont grow too big (our lots are small though real estate costs a fortune) and have beautiful dark maroon leaves. they are deciduous, and bloom in the early spring, then the leaves come in.

medical not sure where you live but winters are mild here, but the fall is scorching hot. i know they sell these bare root inthe winter. i dont know if it would be smart to plant now.

In CA and FL and other hot places it is better to wait until it cools off. So long as the trees can develop a bit of root and settle in before any frost. If you don't get frost there, no need to worry so much about it being too late. I would say October-Dec would be ideal.
