Physical Education in Public Schools

Ah but those adminstrators sure do get paid well don't they? Raises every year too! Top heavy...just like all other gov't institutions. Let's not forget that all the money that is supposed to be earmarked for schools (including most state lotteries) usually just make it to the general fund, where it is wasted into oblivion.

I mean those senators, congresspeople, mayors, etc., etc. have to get paid well and get their raises and benefits and huge expense accounts don't they? How else could they do their jobs without expensing high priced meals, trips, clothes, haircuts, and everything else they can possibly not need?

I should've been a senator.

thats the crazy thing. they talk about salary freezes for state employees yet they put in place loop holes for government officials and the like to still get their pensions funded and pay increases while the real workers, the cogs in the wheel, get everything cut back. and these douchebags get their double dip paychecks for assuming multiple job titles while doing nothing for most of them.

having a wife as a teacher really lets you see whats going on. the US should switch from a free and appropriate education for all to the european standard. if you dont like school, you learn a vocational job. it makes me sick that i pay incredibly high taxes for students that couldnt care less about their education and their lazy ass parents who love to complain but hate to parent. the US is crumbling and public education is a big reason why. the really amazing thing though, all of these countries which have much better prepared students send their kids to our colleges which are still the best in the world. too bad most of our kids wont be able to get in in a few years as overseas students take their spots.

Don't forget about the percentage of kids who are undoubtedly very grateful for your support of public school. Kids who are too poor to go to private school, but are incredibly smart and motivated.

Education is one thing, but maybe we should stop blaming schools for fat unfit kids & look towards the parents.

By your reasoning we might as well not have PE class in school. That's a valid argument but my point is that if we do have PE then it should be done properly and produce results. To do otherwise is hurting our children. BTW, the parents are probably fat asses themselves.

whelp, my primary criteria in house shopping is the school system

Ive only looked at towns where the schools score in the top 10% minimum for SAT's and have broad extracurricular activities

this isn't very hard to do in this state tho...but some of the stats surprised me

the town I posted previously makes top 4% scores in the nation, and has more stuff than whats on their calender....they also have a fine arts program thats pretty amazing

as a parent I want schools to do THEIR job and let me do mine

but yeah, a lot of parents are apathetic and too self absorbed to realize raising their children is the most important job they have

Send em to private school! :) I am free to buy a house in whatever city I want, I dont have to worry about school districts.

While buying food for Abby I saw baby junk food for 6 month olds being advertised as healthy. It was those Gerber Graduates stuff. I looked at the ingredents. It was basically cheetos for a 6-9 month old. A SIX MONTH OLD BABY eating junk food and snacking already! What horrible habits to start so young. All the moms do it. I'm "that mom" for not giving Abby any of that junk.

That combined with kids doing nothing but watch tv and play video games and feel like everything has to be sweet, you get 1 out of every 3 kids being fat. Like really fat. I only remember 2 or 3 fat kids in my class in elementary. Now they are at every bus stop. :(

you keep missing the point. you are talking about obesity, which is about paretning, not schools. these kids are fat because of what they eat not because their PE class don't meet your standards. 30 minutes of exercise 2-3 times a week is not counteract the excessive amount of calories consumed.

Nutrition should be part of health class.

I think I'm just bitter because I didn't make the varsity basketball team as a senior. 30 kids tried out for 12 spots. I was one of the last two guys to get cut from the team. I would have been a starter on a lot of other teams in the state. I was really upset because at the time there was nowhere else to play organized basketball for a 17 year old kid. I couldn't play on the Jr. Varsity team because I was a senior. There were 18 other kids in the same position I was in. Surely they could have come up with a league for us.

Instead I ended up lifting weights more but I also started drinking a little too much.

health class and PE are two different things. you are all over the place. also, no one cares you didn't make your varsity team. kids get cut from sports all the time. so because 18 kids got cut from your basketball team 18 years ago you think they should have accommodated you by creating a separate league?

you sound real bitter.. have you been making excuses for why you got cut this whole time?

holy dag! slappin you, slappin you, slappin you silly.

Coming from a senior in a well respected public high school in NJ, gym is a complete joke. I just had to take fitness, and everyday all of the girls would do maybe 1,000 situps. One guy would lift and i would usually spot him and do shit with him because i lift after school and cant workout in 30 minutes. Everyone else sat on their ass and didn't do anything. The reason is because nobody likes to sweat in gym and go to their next class all sweaty; it's pretty understandable that you don't want to look gross (especially for girls). It shouldn't be the job of a gym teacher to keep students in shape; as someone mentioned it's the job of your parents. Gym teachers can teach children good habits, but it all goes back to the home. Your teacher can't sit with you while you eat your dinner, and take away candy if you don't eat your veggies. PE should also involve more information on diet. We have health 1/4 marking periods, and diet is covered for maybe 3-4 days.

TimTim- didn't see everything you wrote, but i skimmed it and i agree for the most part. The budget at my school is ridiculous; the superintendent has the 3rd highest salary of any superintendent in the state, and the teachers salaries are unusually low. On Friday, they put up 200 dollar clocks in every room because the time changed 1 hour. That's not even as significant as the bus our marching band has- it must have costed thousands to buy the marching band a bus.

As far as education goes, a lot of kids could give two shits and i agree with what you're saying about taxes. A lot of kids who are going to community college next year (not out of choice) really regret not trying in school, and it's a shame that it takes until senior year to see all of your friends getting into schools to start trying while you sat on your ass unmotivated for 3 years before that. A lot of kids also have the potential to do well if they try, which makes it that much more upsetting for them.

My mother used to throw us out of the house to "get the stink blown off us" and we were allowed in for lunch and after dinner. In the interim we played, built forts and explored.
