Personal Trainers - Your thoughts on using one

Was wondering how many use a personal trainer these days. I have had one now for about 18 months and must say has added a refreshing outlook to my workouts. I train 4 days a week and have a trainer for 2 of those. A few years ago it was something I proably would not have even considered but must say I am glad I have.

What are your thoughts on personal trainers?

maybe charles glass or milos sarcev. none at my gym even look the part. i am better built than them. i feel u shouldnt be a personal trainer if u cant even get yourself in shape no matter how much knowledge u have.

amen!

most of them are useless IMHO

like stated above, if i am better built then them, why bother?

of course, i'm sure there are many who are knowledgeable. sadly, they aren't in my area.

I see your points but it's also like saying Hank Haney (Tiger Woods coach) shouldn't have his job to some degree.

A trainer can be in shape but doesn't necessarily have to as big or in better shape than you. It's his knowledge which is key.

If he had knowledge, he would be impressive himself (either big, strong or both)

Of course we have published experts on the internet who are neither & they seem to do quite well.

I am certified through Coopers. I say they are good becasue it can change up your routine, show new exercises, and depends on the person but be a motivator. Nothing wrong with a trainer espeically if you are seeing results!! Thats IMO. I will say their are some useless ones out there. Last point is they are espeically good for beginners that have no motivation or that need to be taught how to lift properly. You see it everyday people lifting incorrectly!! IT KILLS ME!

all tha trainers at my gym dont even look the part. i watch them with people and they come up with the stupidest shit for exercises. if you cant yield results yourself what are you doing trying to get somebody else to do it. lead by example.

i c your point but i still have a hard time taking advice from those who cant. kinda like the old saying...those who can do those cant teach. no offense 2 teachers.

The typical opinion I see here is what I would have said prior to starting with a trainer. In my case the guy I train with is pretty big but he is restricted somewhat now as he has plate in his neck/shouldern from an injury but still lifts pretty heavy. He's got about 3 or 4 different fitness/training certifications from here and there but he's fun to train with and brings in a bunch of different exercises that I typically would not do myself. He's never done a cycle but after my IGF/MGF run recently I think he wants to give it a try.

I've had so many trainers thoughout the years. Some good some stupid, but what they all have in common is they are good for lifting plates , spotting and setting stuff up for you. It's saves time and energy.

Some of the things these trainers do is down right hilarious. It's like I can't believe I just witnessed something like this.

That's true! I do like not having to load and unload plates!

I am a relatively big guy but some of the BEST trainers I have run into looked like Nerds

Some may not look the part but have the knowledge.

As far as havening a trainer, if they are a good spot ( a very nuanced and rare thing) and know just how to push you to your limits without running without you down and have a fresh outlook on how to train then YES its worth it.

A great trainer should have the same care as a really good Doctor, they really have to CARE about you ,I feel.

Very true and I agree 100%

I think they are a great idea if they actually help you,

I see serious lifters using trainers, mostly other serious lifters and spotters the typical trainer at the gyms I go to are not that knowledgeable or helpful.

I only know a couple of trainers that are on gear.

Depends if you are just starting out or 5 years down the road. As long as you remember to change up routine. The basics or weight training/ BB are the same. Being the latter I just go from say a 5 X %for 12 weeks, to Dogg Crapp, to whatever. Starting out, however, SOMEONE needs to show you the RIGHT way to lift, eat, sleep, etc.
As an advanced bobybuilder, I would not spend the $$$.

LOL! No offense to you because I know where you're coming from - I hate loading/unloading too - but it kills me when I see videos of bodybuilders who just pull 45's off the bar and let them fall on the ground because they don't want to take the energy to set them down. Reminds me of going to the gym to do cardio but parking next to the door so you don't have to walk clear across the parking lot!

In some of Ronnie's vids, it looks like he has flunkies who do everything for him but the exercise itself. Load the bar, get his dumbbells ready, wipe his ass...

...what I want to know: what do these guys get for following Ronnie around doing his grunt work? You'd have to be pretty sad if just getting to wipe his sweat up is supposed to be some kind of reward.

I'm just using Ronnie as an example. Nothing against him personally. I'm sure most pro bb's have similar groupies.

alot of them are total fucktards, however there are good ones, you need to research and find the one that is right for you

I dont think yall give personal trainers enough credit. How many people do you see in the gym lifting with improper technique?? Most likely its half of yall talking bad about them. Anyways i think they can be positive espiecally to beginners and even if you are not new they can still change up your work out.

What are your thoughts on personal trainers?

I'd buy Nelson's book first

my comment is 2nd down. a lot of the times it's the trainers themselves who are promoting the incorrect form that will lead to injury

I agree there are some bad trainers out there, so we should label all them that way?? Same as saying becasue one person has been killed taking steroids everyone who takes them will die as a result of them...Think about it.
