Personal Trainer Certification

HELP!!!

Guys, I really want to look into personal training in Canada.

Can ANYONE give an opinion as to which certification is best.

Is ISSA even available here? Is it recognized here or is it better to go with CanFitPro ....

Someone ... anyone ...
I really need your help!

Yea, ISSA is available in Canada any many other countries around the world. I'm currently studying for the Certfied Fitness Trainer (CFT) and the Specialist In Performance Nutrition (SPN).

NASM is definitly the more respected than ISSA. Personal Trainers can make really good dough if they know how to be salesman to build up clientele. I charged anywhere from 52-68/hour. But only got a little above $20 after the club took their cut.

In 6 months I made about $8-9,000 working as a full time student.
I'm not training now, but I will start my NASM cert in a couple of months so I can train over the summer.

Its the best job in the world! hands down

Is thier schools that specialize in training people to become personal trainers?

If you follow the path of Exercise Physiology/Exercise Science at a college or a University you will have a degree that can be used for personal training.

About the certifications, I have ISSA, NASM, and Baylor Sports and Medicine, I also have the one from 24hour fitness

If you want to learn about the kinesiology aspect of training ISSA ans NASM are good

If you want to learn about Nutrition 24hour fitness is great

If you want to learn how to make money and keep clients and be a good trainer in general BAYLOR is the best. They will teach you everything from how to lift, and treat people so you can make your money. The hing with Baylor they only travel the country every other, so you have to be lucky to catch that cert.

As far as how much money we make. I am 21, and a full time student, and this past year I grossed a little more than 30,000 dollars. I didn't bust my ass the way I would if I was not in school. School prohibits me to train at peak hours of availabiblity, so I have to sacrifice some good clients.

But, thats the scoop on Personal training

NASM IS TOP NOTCH....I AM WORKING ON THAT....I HAVE ISSA BUT SOME PLACES THINK THAT CERT SUCKS.

NASM IS WAY BETTER THAN ISSA. NASM IS MORE RESPECTED IN THE INDUSTRY THEN ISSA PROBABLY BECAUSE ISSA IS AFFILIATED WITH BODY BUILDING. YA KNOW THERE IS ALWAYS THAT SKINNY MR KNOW IT ALL RUNNING THE TRAINING DEPT THAT IS A HATER ON BODY BUILDING.

EITHER WAY JUST GET NATIONALLY CERTIFIED AND THEN GET OTHER CERTS AS YOU GO ON

Just received my certification from ESA, now going for a cert through ISSA, then on to Nutritional Counseling

Isn't there a cheapie one you can get through the internet just to say you are certified?

Also how long does it take to get a legit certification?

JC

If you take the right 18 hour course, from a competent, knowledgable, instructor, you might be able to take the test immediately. Sometimes the agencies involved with grading them, don't get around to it for 30-60 days though...make sure to get your CPR card so you can submit it when you take the test.

I was thinking about doing this also. I cannot find a decent job so it seems like a good option. I was looking into the IFPA cert but I will look into the others that you guys recommended. How do you get clients? Just advertise at your gym?

The top-of-the-line gyms in my area will only accept American College of Sports Medicine(ACSM), or National Strength and Conditioning Association(NSCA). Those are the highest rated certifications. Whoever said ACE is good is a retard, because they basically just mail you the certification, and the gyms that might actually PAY you for your CPT services are well aware of that fact.

Which one is the best if you do not have a college degree already? I just need to makes some money!!!!! Help a brother out!!

NSCA-National Strength & Conditioning Association. They are well known, and they are accepted anywhere, along with ACSM, which requires a degree to take. You will actually have to study for it though brother, as it aint a pushover test like ACE.

Thanks for the info- I have no problem studying for the test. I would hope to learn something from the process or it would seem a waste.

24 Hour will train you, quickly as well, but don't expect to get a job at another gym with their in-house training

I took the test for AAFA and scored higher than people in the class that had Exercise Science degrees. How did they get a degree without learning jack squat?

It was about 5 or 6 years ago, I believe at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. I don't remember what schools they went to. I think one guy said Texas A&M, UTA.

it's sounds like he has rocks in his head then...or he took the test after binge drinking. A degree is worth much more than an AAFA Cert.

My Univ. based most of the teaching ACSM guidelines which are the benchmark for gold standard fitness centers.

Its true that you can pick up certification quickly through 24 hour Fitness, and you will learn about nutrition, but I don't see too many trainers that have good knowledge of physiology.

I have an Exercise Science degree, and I just took my ACSM exam (I'll know how I did in a few weeks), and I plan to take the NSCA-Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam. Those three things in conjunction will give you any job you want anywhere in the country that is related to fitness. Don't forget that getting just any old PT certification isn't going to equate to big money. Most gyms have certain certifications they look for.. ACSM, NSCA, ACE, and one or two others are typically accepted. NASM isn't bad. I don't know much about ISSA, but to my knowledge it isn't a toughie. And just because you have a cheapo easy certification doesn't necessarily mean you know your shit.. some people are smart enough to recognize that when looking for a trainer as well. This wasn't intended to turn anybody off or belittle them in any way.. just a friendly warning. Good luck with whatever path you choose!
