Social experimentation is the bane of North American culture. Even the Brits are too strongly socialist, and they're probably the most capitalistic of the Europeans, unless you include former Soviet satellites like Poland and Slovakia.

Voting restrictions/Jim Crow were in effect
The US was not a proven world power.
Individual income was lower.
Morality was no better.
