pendlay rows or pullups/chins?

I Just finished reading The Novice chapter in the Practical Programming book and saw they have you do 3 sets of pullups/chins mondays and fridays to failure (unless you can do 15 pullups which I know I can't). I've been doing pendlay rows but was wondering what works better as a full body unit? I think I might do some pullups in my workout now.

pendlay rows are more of a bread and butter excercise. pull/chins are usually done as accessory, although you could train them as a main pull during a microcycle.

If you're not proficient in the power clean, I would recommend keeping the chins and doing Pendlay rows in place of cleans.

To answer the specific question as to what works the body more as a unit, it's definitely Pendlay rows. Your entore posterior chain works to stabilze the load as you row.

Sounds good, I'll definately stick with the more functional exercise then, and do pullups/chins as accessory...although i doubt they'd probably be looked at as more of a 5 rep max pull :P

In the book, Rip mentions that the chinups are kind of there to ease highschool kids requirements to have good biceps, as the book is catered to teaching how to coach young highschool athletes.

I would prefer doing cleans over pull ups or chin ups, and if not cleans then rows.
