To 9800 or not 9800...??? I was pretty much set on building my pc within the next few months, but I've read that the new 9800 may suck ass...??

What the fuck is going on? Is the new gen ATI"s better? I guess I could always just build my pc now and get two of the old cards and SLI them.......but I really want to put something together that has the power to roll through Crysis. Not that I'm jonesing on Crysis.......but I want to put together a system now that will at least last me a year before I have to upgrade something. From what I gather, the new 9800 still won't be able to handle crysis. It's barely more powerful than the GTX's and Ultra's. Yeah these are the first run cards....I get it. But I'm wondering if crossfire is the way to go. It's an important decision because I basically have to choose the motherboard based on which card maker I choose.....which is irritatin.

Discuss!!! I know my nigga kano wants in on this discussion..... :fro:

Some video geek owned me on another board. How the new ATI cards are SOO much better than NVidia, etc. How they always update their drivers, even years later. How they're more stable, faster, etc. etc.

I forget the best model he quoted, but an ATI with hdmi/dvi, etc. ports and 256MB and above memory - will rawk.

A lot of NVidia's are made low budget for pc makers. I think the NVidia 8800 (?) and above - are good, but pricey. You can google for a review to see if it's worth it.

I mainly care for the opengl abilities. Since I mainly do rendering and 3d animation.

The main purpose of the pc will be to do digital editing........possibly also some rendering and digital effects. But I want to smash games.........am I asking too much?

Go with the high end ATI with every review I've read.

never mind, I see there's a 1 gig version from BFG. I won't touch one of these until I'm "positive" they can take crysis and spank it till it cries uncle.

9800 GX2 is overrated
9800 GTX is better if you want to pay more

I just picked up this card which will serve my needs well, at a fraction of the price. Hell my 8600 GT (oc'd) can almost run Crysis on high with no AA, smooth going on medium, so this new card should kick its ass. I'm not a resolution whore either. 1024x768 is still higher res than 99% of console games on a much larger screen. The higher you go in res. the more you start seeing the gfx engines' flaws.

i dont think there will be a card that can handle crysis at ultra settings for a few years .. thats a singal card.. crossfire and sli is a different story.. Now when it comes to gamming nvidia is the clear winner, when it comes to watching hd stuff and video editing ati blows it out the water.. The raw processing power of the ati x2 that i have is amazing... And once ati gets better drivers the card will be even better.. they have not even begun to unlock the potineal of the x2.. just look at the specs.... I would go with the ati for what you need. for gamers even through its more money go with nvidia .. either way even with ati you are getting amazing gaming perforamce.. dont judge things on crysis.. that game is years ahead of its times.. hardware wise.. within 5 years processers and gpu'2 will be optical.. Lowest end processers with be 30 mgz... instead of 2.4 lol and scabale to 300.. dont mind my spelling i am tired

For most intents, Nvidia's G92 is currently the finest graphics processor on the planet. That fact shined through as we tested the GeForce 9800 GTX as a single graphics card, and it consistently performed—as expected—better than almost any single-GPU card available.

Fellow geeks, how bad is my current card for gaming, relative to what I can get for $200 right now.

K for your answers.

DDR2 memory standard.....you'd be able to play Half Life 2 on high probably but not much else past that. Also depends on what the rest of your PC is like. Get the card I posted up above in previous post, for $160 on newegg.com.

My new HD 3870

My next case will definitely be a full tower. This thing barely fit.

You'll have a tough as hell if not impossible time fitting a high end card in a mini tower. My mid is barely big enough for this card-

If you're willing to learn, and you really want a decent gaming PC, sell your current system and build a new one from newegg.com

We'll help you along the way.

This card is pushing an average of 35 fps in the demo of Crysis on high settings (DX 9). Matched up with a 2.4 gig Core 2 Duo and 2 gigs of DDR2 800. I should probably reformat for optimal performance. :)

I'm happy to be back with an ATI. My motherboard is better suited for them (Crossfire supported, although one is plenty for my case) vs. Nvidia (no SLI) which is another reason I picked up this card. So far I'm very pleased with it.

Yeah they've been known to be iffy. So far so good though. Also I noticed a MOM.exe operation in the task list. Some say it's a keylogger, but it showed up after I installed the card. Isn't it just a Catalyst monitoring function?

ya its a function.. some people been haveing problems opening the control center has to do with buggy drivers with the mom file.. i have had zero problems... and new drivers are coming out very soon

Must be the missing .net framework 2.0 or something, because I had to upgrade to 2.0 before the Control Center worked.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't want to rebuild - not enought time.

Why wouldn't this card fit? my other card fits just fine?

Can you recommend a card that would fit. Thanks.

I just put this together but still waiting on the fan controller and case fans to finish it up:
Cooler Master Stacker 830
Cooler master Real Power Pro 1000W PSU
EVGA 680i mobo
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
Zalman 9700 HSF
2X1GB Crucial DDR2 667 RAM (borrowed 2 of the 4 sticks from my old comp)
EVGA 9600GT
320GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM

I don't have a huge monitor so I don't have to worry about SLI....yet
