Pain below knee / upper shin area while squatting?

Assertive Guy said:
The area you are talking about is exactly where the quads attach to the bone via the connective tissues. If I'm right (because I have had this problem myself), what is happening is this area is being pulled at when you squat in a way its clearly not accustomed to. This may be because your quads are not being stretched enough, or they just are not long enough for you to squat as low as you do.

In any case, you must be kind and patient to this area because if it continues it will litterally splinter your bone at the part it joins too, meaning each time you use your quads, this part of the bone will lift and give you problems that can only be addressed with surgery. This info is probabily your worst case scenario type, but it did happen to me. Here's some straight info:

Wow, Great info, thanks a lot. That site describes my pain/situation almost exactly. Think I'll pass on squatting tonight and save the video for when my knees feel better. I'll mess around with extensions, curls, front squats, leg press, and maybe half-squats or something, see if those bother it.

No problem. What brought it on for me was seated leg raises, and then it affected me in every type of excercise. I had my right leg operated on, and that is ok now, but because I still have it in the left I have to squat/deadlift more for fitness than strength.

Are you an adolescent? Everything I've read says this effects primarily kids that are still growing, but I am certainly done growing. Just wondering.

Im hoping this won't be a huge set back for me since I only did one workout with the pain. I did SLDLs last night and that didnt hurt at all. I'll give it a weak or two off the quads to see how it goes, if it doesn't start to subside I figure i'll go see a doc. This really pisses me off, I was just getting in the groove with squats, spose its myfault for not stretching my quads enough. Thanks again.

Your kneecap might not be tracking properly. That can cause paine below the kneecap. If this persists, do some research on how to strengthen your vastus medialis oblique. (VMO muscle) It might be slightly mistracking and the added stress of this, might have aggrivated your knee. Also, if your pain is still persisting, ice your knee a few times a day for 15 min eacdh time. Target below the kneecap.

I was told by the specialist when I first got this (age 13) I could either have the op to fix it now, or I should grow out of it. Only I didn't (now 25!). Another possibility is that the problem has been dormant, but hey, I'm not a doctor. I hope this problems heals up for you.
