Ordering floor tile online?

If you were remodeling your kitchen, would you even consider ordering your floor tile online> ? Or would you consider that too risky (i.e. delivery time delays, damage to the product during shipping, etc)?

Most likely it will be delivered on a freight truck (aka tractor trailor). That means tailgate delivery. Meaning it will be on a pallet, shrink wrapped, and a 350lb truck driver with no teeth telling you good luck, because his job is to bring it to the end of the tailgate, after that it's up to you. Boxes of tile are very heavy, so good luck. This is a classic sample of trying to save a buck, but taking on one HUGE potential headache.

Go to a local tile distributor, buy the tile, than have your contractor or installer pick it up

Thanks. That is the kind of feedback I was looking for. Ive never done this before so I wasnt entirely sure of the risks involved. And yes, my contractor is doing the installation.

That's the thing about ordering on-line for products such as that. They offer you a great price, bend you over on freight costs, then the whole delivery is a headache.

i wouldnt without being able to see it in person first. looks are deceiving online sometimes.

We already went to a local retailer and saw the tile in person so we know exactly which one we want already.

I'm in the flooring business.....go to a retail store not home depot or lowes all they sell is seconds and you will pay the price....plus you will pay out the ash for shipping instead of a drop charge of maybe 25-45

What kind of tile?
If it's stone - I order from stone locator all the time for jobs - but there's a min of sqft.

No joke - HomeDepot has a decent selection of marble for a great price too.

As for tailgate - most truckers will drop the pallet for you if you tell them ahead of time and you can time it that it's in your driveway and your contractor can move the boxes himself to the house.

Timing a contractor to be at your house at a specific time is a pipe dream.

whats the cost difference between getting it locally as per online? Will they accept back any broken tile due to shipment?

All these things need to be considered before you order online, the cost may end up being even more if they won't take back damaged goods.

make sure when you get your tile you make sure all the lot numbers on the boxes match up.

a lot of distributers especially lowes and home depot and those type of stores have boxes w/ different lot numbers mixed together on pallets.

your title lines will then get all fucked up and the difference could be 1/4" from smallest to largest title.

wouldn't want to pay your contracter for putting down two floors.

I can vouch for boxes of tile being heavy. One time I actually did manual labor at work (shudder) and lifted them for a couple hours. Of course I was in a suit while I was moving them, so I looked great while doing it.

The flooring is Congoleum DuraStone. It is not sold at Home Depot or Lowes. It is sold at local retail/flooring stores. The one local retailer we went to to look at the tile, it was on sale for $9/sq ft but this is w/installation. We obviously are not having the retailer install, but I cant imagine the cost would be as low as $3/sq ft without installation.

We found an online source for the flooring VERY cheap where the total (7 boxes total) comes out to $300something dollars with shipping. The boxes weigh 35# each and there will be 7 boxes total. I could curl one box in each hand (JK). So the weight is not an issue. I will find out what the policy is re: replacing damaged product, shipping times, issues with orders, etc. If everything pans out, we will likely order online because it is so much cheaper.

Also, good job. Imma keep my eye on you. Through this internet connection.

WOAH! SMURFY! Durastone is utter limestone composite garbage. Those are vinyll tiles, also notice they are on clearance? Congoleum has come out with a new product called "dura-ceramic" ten times better looking and performing. My durastone display is in the garbage, along with many retailers I have talked to.

Duraceramic can be grouted like real tile, durastone cannot.

whoa hey easy killer. I know it's vinyl. Ive seen it. I dont want grout. Chill out there chief. Why would consumer reports rate it as #1 out of all types and brands of flooring out there? (August 2006 article)

Is consumer reports garbage?

I have no idea about consumer reports, but I do know what a Congoluem sales rep said to me about a month ago.

Actually, I was a little too forward Smurf. Durastone isn't really a bad choice, I just got a little excited not wanting you to make the wrong choice if you had not seen dura ceramic.

What happened to Laminate?

well it was a toss up between laminate and the durastone (vinyl) tile. I went with durastone b/c I like the durability (.16 as opposed to .08) and the look and the fact that I believe it to be much moresturdy and resistant to scratching and water damage than laminate flooring. And I read consumer reports online article all about kitchen remodeling.

I done did my research!

thanks for the feedback though. Im pretty sure we are going with the online ordering. It's just such a dramatic price difference. I hope we make the right choice
