Opinions on the CLK500?

Servicing that'll be a pain. Get a 1-series bimmer. Fast, nice, and the only thing you'll ever have to pay for is tires.

yes, i've heard about reliablity issues. i wonder how that carries forward for different years. i'm thinking of an 05 or 06. need a good deal on a sexy used car. 135's are cool, but even the few used ones will be too much. don't want to spend more than 25k. this thing is nicer-looking and less common than comparable bimmers.

i'll get one that gives me at least a year's worth of driving under warranty. one reason i'm not favouring a late model 3 series is that they look cheap inside. although the idea of performance is nice, i'm just a regular driver who has never driven anything other than boring cars (coming from an '00 acura tl). but i would like more hp...the acura had 225. would like at least 300.

You'd get a good deal on a used M3, but them shits is expensive to get fixed. A reliable 300hp car won't be inexpensive.

sorry--i am a bimmer man--nice car, but merc's always has service issues.

and don't be swayed by HP--bmws are know for lower HP but much better performance than other cars with greater hp in the same class--its about how the hp gets to the wheels that matters.

i'd get an m3, but i don't drive stick and don't necessarily want to here in socal. i don't know much about smg/smgii, but what little i've read is that the "auto mode" isn't that great. if i want the convenience of an auto, i should get a proper auto. i think.

eddy, you're right...hp at the crank vs at the wheels is an important distinction from what i gather. but if a typical bimmer that i've looked at (let's say 330ci from 04 or 05) has around 225 hp, the tranny (don't get excited jnevstein) would have to be pretty awesome to compare favourably with 300 hp, no? i'd like some push to the acceleration, especially 30-60 or 60-90 on the highway, etc. that seems pretty straightforward and the merc should do well, no?

any other input is appreciated. thanks.

get it,.nice cars!!! i just ditched bmw after 10 yearts for my first mercedes!!! great choice

hayez, what bimmer did you drive, and what did you think of it, and what merc did you get?

now i'm reconsidering a bimmer...if i can get an 06 330ci (255hp) with around 40k miles for 25k (good but not impossible deal),
that could work.
