OTTAWA -- A one-week-old Ontario infant died from complications after undergoing a circumcision in a provincial hospital.

Information about the case was published in the April edition of Paediatric Child Health.

The baby, whose name has been withheld by the parents, passed away after his bladder became enlarged to seven times their normal size.


The child was born at an unidentified Ontario hospital "sometime in the last three years," said Dr. Jim Cairns, Ontario's deputy chief coroner. "The family wants to keep this anonymous."

No charges were ever laid and no legal action was ever taken in the case.

According to the Paediatric Child Health article, the boy was "bottlefed and was reported to be doing well when he was circumsized."

Five hours later, the parents returned to their family doctor with the infant, who had become "irritable and had blue discoloration" below the belly button.

Doctors noticed the discoloration and slight swelling of the penis, but sent the child home.

Fourteen hours after the circumcision, according to Cairns, the child was brought to another hospital where doctors noted he was extremely irritable with marked swelling of the penis and bruising to the scrotum.

The child was then transferred to a paediatric centre, where his bladder was diagnosed, Cairns said, to "seven or eight times its normal size."

The PlastiBell ring, which is used to hold back the foreskin after circumcision, was removed and drained and the child went into shock.

"If the PlastiBell had been taken off five hours after he got there, he would be alive," said Cairns.

The child's death was attributed to septic shock - "an overwhelming infection, leading to multi-organ failure," Cairns said.

"Death is rare after circumcision," said Cairns. "But complications can happen."

The case was brought to Cairns' attention because the circumstances of every death of an Ontario child under five years of age must be reviewed by the provincial coroner's office.

Parents settle lawsuit over botched circumcision

MEDINA - The parents of a Medina boy whose penis was mutilated during a routine circumcision settled their $10 million lawsuit yesterday with the doctor who performed the surgery and Medina General Hospital, a judge said.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

But the settlement came as Medina County Common Pleas Judge James L. Kimbler was preparing to seat a jury in the case of Ian Carque and his parents, Fred and Kristen Carque, vs. Medina pediatrician Martha L. Myers.

William Beyer, who represented the Carque family, said the issue was never money but the opportunity for the family to air its grief and anger and to make the doctor and the hospital "feel accountable" for what happened.

"If this was your son and I told you I'd give you $10 million for this to happen to him, you wouldn't take it," Beyer said.

Ian, now 4 years old, was a newborn Sept. 23, 1994, when Myers amputated the tip of the infant's penis during the routine procedure, which is generally performed for cultural, religious or hygienic reasons soon after birth.

Beyer said the impact of the injury would not be known for years.

The amputated tissue, which was preserved in a saline solution on ice, was reattached by Akron doctor Phillip Nasrallah after the boy was rushed to Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron. But the ordeal left an ugly scar.

Beyer said Ian's doctors have not yet been able to determine whether the boy will suffer sexual dysfunction or loss of sensation from the injury, but it could be a source of embarrassment to him if corrective cosmetic surgery is unsuccessful.

Myers and her lawyer, Stephen Walters, could not be contacted last night for comment.

Beyer said the hospital also was named as a party to the lawsuit because Myers had no privileges to perform the surgery, yet she had performed at least three circumcisions at Medina General Hospital before Sept. 23, 1994.

He said she no longer performs the procedure.

Kristen Carque, who had delivered her son by Caesarean section on Sept. 21, 1994, was resting in a hospital bed when she learned of the injury. The lawsuit claims they rushed to the nursery to see Ian "bleeding and crying."

They asked what happened but Myers did not answer and left the nursery.

Kristen Carque left the hospital in her pajamas to follow her son to Akron for his emergency surgery.

He actually grew up and married a single mom and everyone was happy... until they did a documentary to prove the doctor (who was still receiving accolades for his wonderful theory) for the fraud he was. The one brother (the one who had been raised a boy) committed suicide shortly after the documentary aired and the other brother committed suicide after his world fell apart - loss of job/break up of his marriage and the death of his twin brother.

I can't believe that there are still informed parents out there that subject their perfectly healthy normal male infants to such genital mutilation for purely cosmetic purposes. (As is the case - I have yet to hear of a man who's dick fell off because he was incapable of washing his junk)

Unless one has very strong religious beliefs (which I do not ascribe to but do respect) then I don't understand the desire...

My sister has two sons who are NOT circumsized. Their father, her husband is circumsized. I have yet to hear of any trauma that is resulting.

My father is not circumsized and neither is my brother as we are Eastern European. NO non-Jewish Eastern Europeans circumsize their infants and I have yet to hear of anyone's cock falling off.

Either way... sad, sad stories.

None that I know of... If you were born here and your parents did it to you, I can see they were talked into/pressured into it. But if you were born there... nope.

Hell, I remember when I gave birth to my oldest (1992) I was roommates with an English woman and she had to raise holy hell to insure they that would NOT circumsize her son.
