I'm thinking they no workie....

I'm an older dude...41, 6'2", 260lbs....so I'm a bit afraid to bench heavy; didn't want to blow a shoulder or pec...just worked on increasing reps....

Got my bench up to 275 for 15....and Rep Calc says that my one-rep max is OVER 450.


Got a wild hair today and loaded up 315 and got 6 solid....same calculator says my max is 360.


I suspect they just lose accuracy with higher reps? just didn't think it was that bad.
 
They are based on an algorithm that give more weight (pardon the pun) to reps than I think should be given.

Yea they don't work so well if you stick to a high rep or low rep routine. If you mix your workout up and do high and low reps they work fairly well, but I'm pretty sure you won't be able to do as many or more weight than you would if you focused on one or the other. If you take someone who does under 6 reps most of the time and have him do an estimated 15 reps he most likely won't make it. It works the other way around and I learned this in football awhile back when they used the calculator up to 10 reps. I would try to go for the 10 instead of 1 because I realized a lot of it is mental the higher you go and trained for this. I also think if you constantly do a small amount of reps your body learns to recruit more motor units provided you max out frequently.
 
I have always found they have shortchanged me in the past (underestimating my 1 rep max based on my reps), but worked quite accurate for my brother-in-law....

Our bench presses were really close. But for 1 Rep Max attempts, mine were always about 10% higher, whereas if we were using the same weight for higher rep days, he'd always be able to outrep me by an extra 1 or 2.

I suspect it is all to do with us all having different amounts of fast twitch & slow twitch muscle fibres... So these 1RM calculators may be based on the general average they have obtained with most people they tested it on...

This is my guess anyhow. :)
 
That's true. They will vary for body types but I find they are only really accurate for 10 reps or less, with increasing accuracy as reps go down. For example, performing a double or triple will yield a more accurate 1 rm than a set of 8 or ten.

I agree. I wouldnt use any of those calculators for anything over 10 reps. Even 10 reps can be fairly inaccurate, but if your using it for 5 reps and under it can be +/- 5%
