One set to failure

If one set to failure is all the muscle needs to grow then why do 3 or 4 working sets? Is there any difference in growth?
 
I think because first of all very few can actually do one set to such complete failure that it could stimulate growth. If you look at the workouts of the guys that advocate the heavy duty approach, they still do more than one set, and even those aren't a regular set, they do drops, down the rack, etc.
For most of us mere mortals, we need more sets.
