Omg!! Aaaaaaaahhhh!!!!!!!!!

My hubby had the brilliant idea tonite to mess around with my laptop. Now it's dead. The hard drive won't work. He says it's cuz of a virus - he had nothing to do with it - but why did he have to mess with it now?? Especially 1 week out from my comp???

EVERY FUCKING THING regarding my comp was on that laptop!! EVERYTHING!! My diet log, info, etc.......NOW IT'S ALL FUCKING GONE!!

And he is so damned insensitive!! When I started to cry he told me "You're freaking out & you need to calm down." In a very sarcastic tone... very rude!

I am SO pissed!!!

How did a virus affect the HD mechanically? Your data should be retrievable, probably just need to reload the boot block. Don't overwrite any data, unless it's too late.

All I can say is REGULAR BACK UP! I've lost more stuff on toasted harddrives... I keep everything important on websites or on paper.

this laptop was supposed to be the backup for the desktop....but I guess I shoud've backed it up on a USB or something....

I guess I'm more upset over his attitude....

it's not very likely that a virus made your hard drive stop working, so power on, hit F8 repeatedly once you see the boot screen and try booting into safe mode.

I flipped.....

But he was able to restart it & I've now backed everything up (Word/Excel docs) onto a portable USB.....then I backed up all my pics onto the desktop.....

Need to buy an external hard drive to further back everything up....

My vote is 1) Call the Geek Squad and charge it to HIS credit card! screw the cost, and 2) I would so ice his ass so bad, that man wouldn't get word one (much less LOVING, forget that crap) for at least a month but the last words I would say to him before a month of silence would be to tell him to NEVER, EVER, EVER lay his hands on your computer again, and if that means buying another computer to keep family peace, so be it!!!

My husband and I had a few computer altercations. There is ONLY ONE solution for this problem, everybody has his own computer and NOBODY touches anybody elses computer, no ifs, ands or buts, no excuses.

Trust me on this one here, this is the sort of shit that can trigger divorce. Get an extra computer and lay down unbreakable ground rules immediately.

Honestly he knows more about computers than me - he does work with them at work. He claims that there is a virus infecting this laptop or that - due to not shutting it down regularly + it being old - that the hard drive is shot.

Need to pick up an external hard drive this week so I can get all my stuff off of it before it dies for good....

With all the stress of this competition + redoing the house - the thought of losing ALL my paperwork literally threw me for a loop!!

I still think every man for himself when it comes to computers ... my current husband has a bit of computer knowledge, too, and uses them regularly, has done some programming for work and knows a LOT about hardware ... and I came into the marriage with a degree in programming (which I never use, but that's another story) and had built my own multimedia PC from the ground up so we had a couple of serious wars.

Now me, personally, in SPITE of my education I honestly think computers are a lot like German Shepard dogs, they'll work a bit for EVERYONE in the house, but they truly in their hearts want only one master.

In this area, we have Geeks For Rent. These folk will come out and rescue any mess a person makes.
