Old roomate is trying to jerk me around w/ my security deposit. what to do?

what should i do?

Here's the deal. I rented out a room in his condo when i opened an office far from where i lived. It was supposed to be temporary (4-5 months), ended up being about 9.
He has half a months rent and my security deposit which he's supposed to return.
I call him about and he tells me the bathroom and bedroom were not "clean to his standards" and that he was going to charge me a $75 cleaning fee. I scrubbed, and vacuumed everything. There's no way whatever i left would warrant even $20.

There was also some quarter inch scuff marks from my bed on his cheap ass wood laminate floors, which he wants me to pay for. He says the whole plaque(sp) has to be removed, meaning all the ones around it. That shit is like a dollar a square foot lol..and the marks are minor.


This guy is a fuckin homo, and just a pussy in general. He's trying to be all passive aggressive about it and nickel and dime me because he doesn't like me(anymore). Towards the end of occupancy, i almost put his head through the window but i didnt want to create additional tension.

i made it clear if he tries to jerk me, he will not like the outcome (legally of course).

what should i do? he has ZERO leverage..there was no lease stating about the condition etc and what standard it had to be. If a judge saw the pictures of the "damage" they'd probably laugh.

Yeah... security deposits are nortoriously hard to collect on. Everything is at their discretion and very difficult to prove otherwise and certainly not financially worth pursuing.


Anyway... so what is the total mount of money he wants to keep - $75?


Move on... christ almighty.
 
Well if it were me, and I knew that I did not do anything wrong , and that this guy was ripping me off. I would hunt him down like the POS he is when its nice and dark outside, or find someone who wants some extra cash , and pay them(less fun). Thats just how I roll NUGGA!

what's up calveless? well 20 years ago i would say "let me handle it, i got a couple friends in lauderdale have a "talk" with him and we will get shit straight. lol. now adays being civil and all, i would take him to small claims ( cost you bout fifty bucks) your side sounds solid and most states have laws concerning verbal agreements. no matter what, i hope you get your cash. good luck bro.
 
Take him to small claims court. You can file the complaint yourself.. make sure there was no damage to his house. This is what a security deposit is for primarily... If you have pictures of the inside of the house, I would use this as well. As soon as he is served by the sheriffs department , I have a feeling your deposit will show up in the mail.. good luck
 
for 75 bucks, move on like JH1 said, or if youre a particularly vindictive bastard, tip off the IRS about something or other and get him audited

audits...brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
 
i had a security deposit that was like 1000 highly doubt the sec deposit was 75 if so he wouldn't have made this thread.

also just take em to peoples court isn't it free to the winner
 
lol..def not about 75 dollars. he's trying to deduct an extra $500 from what he's supposed to give me. i offered to him $100 bucks for the floor, which is WAY generous considering they can probably be cleaned professionally.

he's talking about the closet (which was a piece of shit and unusable, and i did work on) and the scuff marks on the floor, which is bullshit because they're so small and he has POS wood laminate, which are not durable.
on top of all that, he wants to charge me a $75 cleaning fee for leaving a pile of hair (that collected in my room) and leaving mildex he says, on the grout (of his 30 year old bathroom tiles). LOL, he actually said that.

i told him if he tries to fuck me, i will make his life miserable. didn't threaten him exactly, but i think he gets my point.

he was your friend? tell him "let me come over and inspect it, and i will clean it myself for cheaper" go over there, take pictures etc, ask for your money back.

be like "ill sign a contract, give me my money ill go over there this weekend, clean it and we can be on our ways"

if hes gay about that, he obviously just wants to juke you for your money and u should firebomb the place for ur moneys worth
