For this Im talking about a strict standing bb shoulder press.

What style do you prefer/reccomend? Iv heard of multiple types being reccomended here.

First I used to do my presses like rippetoe says, and here is the video for that.

YouTube - Mark Rippetoe: Weighted Press 1

Or should I do my presses more with a straight up and down motion, heres an example 2.57 of this video YouTube - Elitefts.com - UGSS December 2008

Or should I have more of an arch and do them more like this:
YouTube - Jim Wendler - Military Press 225x11

You are overanalyzing too much. I know you think there is gonna be this mystery revealed so you can do more etc. Maybe to an extent sure. But really just do it safely. I prefer Wendler's style but that's mean. I think all 3 styles ARE right. ;)

I use strict military press style when I do mine. Feet together, back perfectly straight, I go from the chin straight up, then straight down, stop at the chin, back up. I would do whatever style feels best for your shoulders.

You can look at my vids to see how I do mine. I agree totally with Future though, don't overanalize just press.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Only thing I'd add is the perfectly straight back style seems to be safer for the lower back. A big arch seems to enable me to lift more to full extension, but I feel a lot more compression down there.

I'm a big fan of whatever Rippetoe says and I wish i knew his name when I was your age. Few people have probaly analyzed this particular movement as much as he has(it's old school). It's rarely performed by anyone but the elite athlete which is the level Mark coaches at. Powerlifting, bodybuilding,or general strength and fitness conditioning have a solid foundation with Rippetoe's teachings.

Today I did just a strict military press, kept my head looking forward instead of bobbing it back and forth, feet together, back straight no arch and just press it up and slightly back when it gets over my head, but not excessively, and went down to about chin level. Felt slightly harder but I prefered it and now SL wont get annoyed with my calling shoulder presses military presses haha

I have been doing the rippetoe style for a while now. Once i grasped that "getting under the bar", i found myself able to press a lot more weight than if i had the arch.
