I think it established research that steroid use increases the size of the left ventricle. However, it is speculation what affect this has on lifespan, etc. Kinda scary to think about though. I have heart disease in my family.

Also, his remark about looking shitty 10-20 years later is bullshit. If you juice like crazy for 10-20 years then stop, of course you will look like shit. You will lose much of your muscle mass but still have all that stretched skin. Now, if 20 years later you go on HRT and keep training, then you are going to look better than most people your age.

It's not "proven." It's just noted that some people sometimes have some enlargement of the left ventricle. And there is not evidence that that has any effect on the health of your heart.

Now if you change the topic to cardiomyopathy then you are talking about something serious but you don't get that from roids.

Here is the real deal on using AAS and heart disease. AAS can cause an increase in blood pressure. If your B/P remains high for extended periods of time it causes the heart to have to pump much harder to circulate blood.

Over a long period of time of being stressed the heart like any muscle will develop hypertrophy. This will cause the left ventricle which is responsible for the pumping of the oxygenated blood back into the circulatory system to have to work harder to pump because it incurred increased resistance from the increase in B/P.

Overtime the heart muscles will become distended (stretched too far) and lose it's elasticity and therefore lose it's ability to effectively pump the blood through the circulatory system causing the blood to backup into the heart and the plasma in the blood to separate and pool in the lower extremities causing edema.

Over time this edema backs up into the lungs causing pulmonary edema or fluid in the lungs. Pulmonary edema literally causes you to start drowning in your own bodily fluids known as Congestive Heart Failure.

Another side effect of steroid abuse which also plays into the scenario above, is the long term use of AAS can increase the LDL cholesterol and cause atherosclerosis or the build up of plaque in the arteries causing the narrowing of the arteries also causing increased blood pressure causing the problem above.

Many bodybuilders who experience these types of incidents usually either have underlying heart disease and/or heart defects and/or a family predisposition. Otherwise it usually takes very high doses of AAS for long periods of time to have the kind of conditions Mike Matarazzo and many others have tried to attribute to AAS abouse. Just like Lyle Alzado said GH and AAS caused his brain tumors with no medical substantiation.

The bottomline is if taken sensibly and responsibly AAS will not kill you or give you heart disease but if you have a predisposition to heart disease then you may be playing Russian Roulette.
