Never thought I'd say that, I love low cost providers. He's not the President so I guess that's not illegal.

A whole week I've been trying to call those assholes to get a Windows Recovery CD.

Why do I need a Windows Recovery CD? My laptop had worms and shit like a day after I got it, Norton was never installed properly, it never worked. It was messing up other parts of my computer.

So last weekend redguru of Elite Fitness had me uninstall everything NORTON.

SO it also uninstalled "Symantec System Restore"

So I can't restore my system anymore, and the worm won't let me reinstall Norton.

So, so, so now I call Dell and I didn't buy an ACTUAL copy of Windows XP Professional they say, and since I didn't order the recovery CD with my original order for $10, NOW THEY WON'T SELL IT TO ME. They said I have to order a new copy of Windows for

$309.

I freaked out. Sony Vaio replaced my recovery CD's after TWO YEARS. Dell is supposed to be the best now, why don't they have that deal with Microsoft??????????? Babu had no answers.

"I BOUGHT THIS ONE MONTH AGO AND IT NEVER WORKED RIGHT. I BOUGHT WINDOWS, JUST SELL ME THE RECOVERY CD THAT WAS OFFERRED WHEN I PURCHASED, PLEASE?"

"no we cannot do that. You had 21 days to report difficulties"

"But your customer service has been messing around with me for 2 weeks!!!"

"We offer software support starting at $79"

"I will never buy another Dell."

I thought Dell always sends a copy of XP with their computers?

I'm sure you covered the basics (speaking to other customer reps, telling them the software was never installed properly, lie).

Can't you run some other sort of antivirus? Go to www.download.com and run Spyware Doctor...that program is pretty sick...it's worth a shot.

nope i don't THINK it comes standard...maybe it does now but not when i bought my comp. ages ago. I just keep a few burned copies of windows XP and other important programs with stolen codes from online so i could use them on all of my family's computers :) . We have never bought a windows XP cd yet we have it on 4 computers :evil: :Chef:

if it won't let you dl norton antivirus try DL'ing ad-aware. It's the program i use and it always finds crap on my computer and gets rid of it fast. :) you can get it at download.com too

I have the Norton Install CD's, GENUINE. I BOUGHT 'EM with this laptop. this damn fucking laptop won't let me INSTALL IT fully. is that not the damndest thing you ever heard??

lol :evil:. First, you need an original XP cd. You can go about this 2 ways getting it for free: 1) go to your local comp USA or whatever comp store you'd like and get a windows XP cd. Then go home and burn the CD! take it back and tell them it did not work on your comp, blah blah blah no questions asked customer is always right and get your money back (but you still have the CD at home burnt). Then either use the code provided on the cd you BOUGHT and returned or find one online (very easy as well) and install it on your computer. make 2-3 copies since you might lose one and since they are great to have.

2nd option: if you have a friend that has an original windows XP, burn the cd and then go online and find a CD key or whatever to use it to install it.

both these ways you get the great program but not have to pay the RIP OFF BS price that no computer buyers should have to pay. :)

Thank You. I will consider it. And for the record, it is not that I mind paying for the software. I bought the laptop with the software on it, and a recovery CD was available for purchase for $10. It has been mere weeks since I bought the computer, which never worked correctly, and they want to charge me 30 times that price for the CD now. It is this I take issue with, and it is this I will not stand for. I bought Windows. "Buy the recovery CD or never get another chance" was not property disclosed to me.

i know you dont MIND paying for the software but i still think XP should be standard on all new computers (like a radio in all new cars - just have to have them). Just have a friend burn it though or go "buy" it and return it and get a code online or PM me if you need one and you can use mine if you want. When the system fucks you over, fuck it back harder :evil:

Do a search for XP OEM CDs on the various price compare sites, you should be able to find a legit XP Pro full-install CD with hologram and license for $79-$125. Hopefully you can download the various Dell utilities for power management and shit from Dell's support site.

Is there no hidden Windows recovery partition on the hard drive?

Gateway includes blank CD's to do this.

EBAY will have OEM versions for cheap

First of all, fuck paying for software.

Second of all the virus software "FREE AVG " is perfectly suitable for anything Norton does and guess what, its free.

Pirating windows is your best bet. Though lately I've been having issues with keycodes that I have generated in the past - do not get a volume license edition of windows - make sure its just "XP Pro"

And windows XP has its own system restore feature Programs>accessories>system tools>system restore

definately. I put that on all my and my family's computers. That, ad-aware, spybot, and zone alarm. Oh yea...firefox too. Can't go wrong w/ that combo.

I would talk to manager again at Dell, you bought a laptop and it automatically has it installed.
Gateway prompted me like every time I used my laptop to burn my recovery discs that they provide. All of the software on my new gateway is licensed to me and the same with your computer.
The guy sounds completely incorrect on this. File a lawsuit, have them served, takes a few minutes and itll get their attention

Most laptops have some proprietary software on them that didn't come bundled with Windows from Microsoft, the manufacturer adds their own extras and includes them on the restore disc. These are the little goodies you usually see down in the System Tray in the lower right corner of the screen, by the clock. Things like a battery meter. And mfg-specific help files. Isn't there like a Dell Help Desk or something that has hardware-specific help information? Surely it's not just a plain-vanilla Windows installation.

Did the system come with any written documentation? A small manual? A few cut sheets with instructions? Did you read any of them? One of them would explain how to restore the system in case of a problem. If you didn't get a CD with the system, then they HAD to include that stuff on the hard drive.

What size is your hard drive supposed to be? And what size does Windows say it is? Is there, say, about 700M-1G missing? Like, if your hard disc is supposed to be 20G, but Windows says that your C:\ partition is only 18G? That extra missing space is taken up by the contents of a Windows restore CD hidden on your drive. There should be instructions on how to get to it, either in the printed documentation that came with the system, or in the Dell help desk stuff that should be installed in Windows. It's usually a matter of holding down one of the F keys when you boot the system.

threaten legal action,here it is law to provide the cd with a computer you buy, I had issues with the people I bought my pos computer from and once I got a friend to call as my "lawyer" they were happy to provide said cd

This should have you Microsoft XP Activation Key....just borrow/burn someones copy of XP. The OS software key is the important part of the whole thing.

Dell is great for computers. They suck when it comes to software. Btw why do you need a recovery CD ? can't you just download one from Limewire ? Damn dude, it's been years since I paid for a software....

He can't access the Dell recovery partition, CTRL-F11 doesn't work. The image file directory is missing, so he couldn't create a new recovery partition. It would not complete the install of any Antivirus software, and he couldn't get to the windows update website. The hidden partion isn't even showing up, so something has messed with his MBR.

Branugga, download knoppix (its linux on a CD, does not install ANYTHING)... put in your CD, start... it will boot up to a cute desktop. You will be able to see all your partitions and harddives... if you can see the thing you need, you can load knoppix in a way that will allow you access to your CD burner so that you can burn that image in the partition

I guess Im lucky that my dell was what i ordered.....although i did think i ordered a cd burner with it. I didnt notice it for at least 6 months tho because i had dial up at the time and didnt do the music thing....and when i did, i didnt have a burner....and when i looked at the invoice it didnt have a burner with it

At this stage, assuming he's completely given up on Dell, all that can be done is get the data off from the machine. Reset the MBR and reinstall an OS from scratch. At least you'll have a full-sized drive out of the whole sorry mess.

Of course that is how Dell works everything is an upgrade or they just send you the most basic thing that is there business model that is how they work. Also if you are big corp client they will bend over backwards do anything they can to help you at but if you and SMB or end user your fucked. People are always looking for the best deal when it comes to PC's that first payment but not looking at TCO.

It says the total size of my partition is... 52.3 gigs, 42 gigs free? I think I had a 60 gig hard drive.

Well, I guess it's not plain vanilla install if I have a thing that shows me if my battery is charging. So nope.

They were trying to tell me I didn't really buy Windows.

Obviously no, anyone can see Dell cannot afford to pay for Windows in each computer when we sell to you at such low price." This was all in Russian accent he was reading out of a book I guess.

I said "It was $1,600 and $1,100 after I used my coupon. That's $1,000 more expensive than you thought. Will that cover Windows now?"

He said "Mhhmm OK. well I see. yes but you didn't buy Windows. I can sell you retail version."

I can't. I am required to have it for school, I have to bring it to class everyday. Dell would have it for weeks or months. Devastation is going to send me CD's to fix it, he's sending them today. I just hope I can make it so this doesn't happen again.

Did anyone else think my conversation with the Russian guy a few posts up this page was hilarious?

i've had 4 dells in 4 years and never one problem. except the MB going out on the first laptop, which dell replaced within 4 days from me calling them. i'd only buy a dell

He's full of shit. See that Microsoft sticker on the bottom of the computer, with the words "Product Key" and a long string of letters and numbers? That's your proof that you OWN a license for Windows on that PC. If that fellow really told you that, he should be fired. Call them back, and every time someone tells you something you don't want to hear, ask to talk to their supervisor.

By the way, you can use that product key to install Windows from anyone else's Windows CD, as long as it's the same version. The key will work if, say, your system has XP Home on it and you get a copy of someone else's Windows XP Home Edition CD, or if you have XP Professional and you have a copy of someone else's XP Professional CD. You just enter the product key when the installation process prompts you to, and you're good to go.
 
you don't need to enter a product code on dell pc's. at least the four i've owned i never did and i've done plenty of reformatting in my day

I freaked out. Sony Vaio replaced my recovery CD's after TWO YEARS. Dell is supposed to be the best now, why don't they have that deal with Microsoft??????????? Babu had no answers.

"I BOUGHT THIS ONE MONTH AGO AND IT NEVER WORKED RIGHT. I BOUGHT WINDOWS, JUST SELL ME THE RECOVERY CD THAT WAS OFFERRED WHEN I PURCHASED, PLEASE?"

"no we cannot do that. You had 21 days to report difficulties"

"But your customer service has been messing around with me for 2 weeks!!!"

"We offer software support starting at $79"

"I will never buy another Dell."

You don't need the CD code if you use a restore disc. A restore disc isn't the same as a real Windows installation CD. But that product code will work to get Windows re-installed from anyone's borrowed CD.

I still think he has the restore partition on his system, and just needs to learn how to access it.

I still think that missing space is your restore partition. It's hidden from you, the only way to access it is to press the right F-key when you boot the system. Just gotta know which one. Should be in your system documentation somewhere, or in the online help.
 
Never knew Dell sold pc's w/o windows installed. How are you supposed to get all those extra applications and dell utilities? Are they supplised on an extra disc?

I have TWO dell laptops. And both run extremely well. I bought them with xp (their service was good -- i got xp home on one order, and i called and bitched and upgraded me to xp pro for FREE). I called and asked for recovery cd and original xp disks and they sent them to me for free. Both at next day shipping.

now the habib tech support -- that leaves a lto to be desired. I prefer the "online support chat" option. Way WAY easier and faster.

Wanna make money: invest in indian tech companies that do online chat support. None of that accent shit to worry about.
