What do you guys do for obliques?

I'm trying to get mine nice and strong, so I've been doing oblique sit-ups and standing dumbell curls.

I got up to 100 pounds on the dumbell curls and really strained my lower back (I think it was the sacroiliac joint). Kinda pissed me off because I want a nice, strong midsection.
 
You curled 100 lb dumbells?

A very good exercise for obliques is the saxon bend. YOu hold two light dumbells straight up above your head, and bend to left, and then to the right.
 
Sit straight up in a chair holding a weight at chest level a few inches away from you, and turn your hips from side to side while keeping your legs stationary.

Stand up with a 35, or 45lb plate being held by one arm to your side. put your opposite hand usually on the back of your head by your ear...then bend to the side that the weight is on as far down as possible without moving any other body parts, and come straight back up...and repeat on the other side after your reps are done for that side.

Side Crunches, twisting situps....

these will help ya with your obliques, but dont go crazy on them, and remember they need to rest like any other bodypart so dont do them everyday.
 
Yeah, I held the dumbell in one hand and bent down in that direction to the side, then lifted it back the other way.

I'll try your suggestion, thanks.

I only do one body part a week. My joints are crap so they need the rest.
 
Don't train them -- thickens your midsection and detracts from the V-taper. Unless of course you want to look thick and unstreamlined.
 
I can understand not wanting to get them huge. I doubt I ever will be huge anywhere on my body, hehe. I mainly lift for health and strength reasons, but looks are a major bonus.
 
if you lift for health and strength, i would do them...but casual is right, and if you lift as a BB then you might want to go light, or even not do them...besides, they are hit indirectly when doing a lot of other work.
 
Obliques and abs play an enormous part in the execution of two best exercises, the deadlift and the squat.

If you don't train your abdominal region, how will you expect your core lifts to go up, and thus your body to gain mass and grow?

Everyone is at a different stage in the game. I, for example, can lift much more than you, according to what I have seen you post. However, when you feel the need to draw external support from others in order to stoke your fires of motivation, I and others who are more able than you don't blast you for it. Respect the fact that each lifter can only progress so fast, and what you want may not be what others want.

Yes, they are exceedingly important, just like the rest of the involved muscles during those lifts. However, for some, they find that additional ab work is not necessary, myself included. I topped out at a low Box Squat load of 595 a week ago for a relatively "easy" triple. I never train my abs. I never use a belt, either. I progress well.

Just because something is or is not for you doesn't mean everyone else has to follow your model. To each his own.

well telling someone that they wrong b/c you lift more than they do and belive differently is not exactly beneficial, call it what you want.

I belive in ab stability work and oblique work and I too don't think that someone that weighs 150 has a reason to worry about their obliques ruining their v-taper. I think their lack of upper body is what is hurting their v taper

To address the original topic, if you want oblique strength without a lot of size, do heavy doubles or triples of DB side bends. Fast tempo, like 1/1/1.
 
IL - don't worry about it. It just bugs me that this board is so size-obsessed. It really is ridiculous. I'm actually sorry that people here know how big I am because then I'm never truly judged on the quality of my ideas. BTW rev I'm 160 so hah.
 
saxons bends are great -- thanks for reminding me, I forgot about them.

My staple is side bends. But I try to do some rotational stuff too, to mix it up. I've done "wood chops" and this twisting move with a olympic bar in a corner. Full contact twists, I think they're called.
 
Casual- I consider most of what you say as good stuff, the point you make is a good one, some of the best advice I have gotten has been from people who looked like they never spent a day in the gym. Also some of the worst advice I have gotten has come from those same types.

I honestly belive that your points are taken into consideration by most the people here especially the ones who are more aesthetically oriented. I think that the concentration right now on this board leans more toward strength athletes who are more concerned with function. bottom line is that I would consider anyone's advice or ideas as long as they were logical and aimed at getting me faster, stronger, or bigger, regardless of the accomplishments of the source...
