Then enlighten me with your definition of "hate speech."
Some parts of the world disallow any criticism of the state religion as hate speech. Other countries consider being critical of any ethnic or religious group hate speech.
Now, exactly why is "hate speech " bad?
Hate is defined as "intense dislike; extreme aversion or hostility."
Speech is defined as "the act of speaking."
Therefore, strictly speaking (pun intended) if I speak about my extreme dislike or aversion of the treatment of Jews by the Nazi's then it is hate speech...
Back to reality, hate speech is considered speech the majority or those in power dislike. The whole point of the 1st Amendment is to protect unpopular speech and avoid a tyranny of the majority. We have been conditioned to think of the United States as a democracy (little d) but the founders were well educated in the classics and understood that a democracy will always end with a tyranny. They hoped to avoid it with a representative republic ruled by a constitution that limited the power of the federal government (other founders disagreed and wanted a strong federal government). They made it hard to amend but I would submit the civil war wasn't the event that sealed the fate of the 10th Amendment and shifted the power to the federal government but the 17th Amendment...after all..democracy is good???
I am by no means talking shit about anyone but it's ashame that the majority of ppl don't even know the difference between Democracy and Republic.. Now it's just mob rule...
