Oatmeal isn't anything special

With all the talk about how great oatmeal is, due to its low GI, I thought I would check it out and see how other foods compared. What I was suprised to find was that it isn't all that special, many other foods have just as low or an even lower GI then oatmeal.

For example, everyone says to stay away from rice, but instant rice boiled for 1 minute has the same GI as oatmeal (46 on the glucose scale). Rice bran is much lower at 19, and so are most bran cereals. Mixed grain breads are also just as good as oatmeal.

And get this, sponge cake and banana cake have the same GI as well. So why are we all eating Oatmeal when we can have cake instead?

after a while, oatmeal becomes the main dish:/ its so good omg:/ i <3 oatmeal, oatmeal with everything:)
and if u put 1 cup 1/2 and oatmeal u get like a 2cup serving:/

when low carbing...fucking nothing tastes better than oatmeal mixed with your fav protein shake.

I agree w/ you HAZ, there aint nothing special about it that other foods don't have. Yes it's a staple food, but many other foods have similar beneficial effects. That's one thing many people don't realize. They get stuck eating oatmeal and think that's the only way to go.

Oatmeal is the only kind of starchy carb I've been eating in the morning....so it's the best thing I eat all day

It has a nice profile of soluable and insoluable fiber, unlike banana cake and sponge cake, which have nil or next to it.

I don't consider oatmeal a great fiber source. It only has 3-4 grams of fiber per serving. You'd need almost 10 bowls of the stuff to get enough fiber. High fiber cereals like All-Bran are much better.

If you're dieting/cutting.. Is it best to eat Oatmeal only in the morning? or can you eat it with any meal to substiute for the carbs.. instead of having veggies?

i love oatmeal,i eat it 3x a day but i do change it up on rest days,i switch to sweet potatoe and other carbs because i have time to prepare my meals.......everyone's diet is different you might find WHOLE WHEAT BREAD is more beneficial to you than oatmeal and it does not hinder your progress and for some of us its the opposite....but its good to change it up once in a while, add a mix to your dish's keep it good enough that you wont end up hating the diet because of its blend tasting food, be creative with food:) dont just eat plain oatmeal, trow in some sugar free packet,cinnamin,1tbsp sugar free pancake syrup <(TASTE GOOOOOD)>
make french fries out of sweet potatoe,or sweetpotatoe crepes with cottage cheese,:)

other than that FOOD IS GOOD<3

To me, oatmeal is very filling when you have hunger problems while dieting. I add more water to trick myself into thinking there's more food, although there is a point where it can kind of get a bit mushy.

A bowl of oatmeal wont last w/ me. W/in 1 or 2 I'll be hungry like you wouldn't believe. I need some form of solid protein w/ each meal so that I wont feel the hunger pangs. Even if it is just eggwhites w/ oatmeal.

But if you're looking for fiber, and low carbs, check out those bran cereals. 1/3 cup = 10g fiber. Fiber is extremely high in these cereals, and very very low carbs. Oatmeal has only 3g fiber. A piece of wheat bread, just 1 slice has 3g of fiber. I eat plain oatmeal here and there b/c I need variety, but honestly I think the taste sucks.

oats have more fat than pasta, rice or bread

though it is a good (the best ?) low GI source of carbs
