I'm currently trying to build some core muscles relating to an old back injury so after a profressional consult, I tried this.

It's a bent over, one arm row, except on a fitness ball.

just like using a bench, but put your knee and hand on top of the ball quite close together and "tripod" your other leg out (not straight up and down like with the bench). Significantly lighten the dumbell as you likely won't be able to do as much as usual (I couldn't anyway). Now with a level back and usual form, do your one arm DB rows.

MY GOD! I had sweat pouring off my forehead as I tried to balance and lift at the same time! This is hard with any kind of weight!

Give it a shot if you want a challenge. Most fitballs are anti-burst to 1000 lbs so go heavy if you feel confident.

Hmmm does seem very functional IMO :)

Yes, functional...unless you are trying to increase your rowing strength.

ahh scared of the fitness ball, I remember seeing one guy doing dumbell press on the fitness ball and it just popped and one of the dumbells landed on his head. I still get the shivers today when i look at one.

There are LOTS of things you can do on the ball for core stability. I make my clients do them all day, cuz alot of them are older...so they're not concerned with weights...more about functional shit, and balance.
