Nutrition/Dietician

Hi, my name is Joanna and I'm a CPT (NASM) and I'm interested in nutrition and diets for my clients. By law I cannot prescribe diets because I'm just a trainer. I've looked into certifications for nutrition but have only found that you must have a college degree in food science to sell/consult in nutrition. Apex Fitness allows their certified trainers to sell diets but only in an Apex licensed club. Does anyone know of any certification or ANY continued education that I can pursue for nutrition WITHOUT going to college? Thanks!

Google. I know it's a pain, but it works, you just have to read a ton. I found something awhile back but for the life of me I cant remember what the cert was... I have a "nutrition specialist" cert thru IFPA, but I think it has been changed since... I didn't learn jack, that I didn't know prior... it just made my business card look pretty.

My girlfriend is in college for that right now.

What's the job market like for them? Is PT/Dietician the way to go or what?

Otherwise it's like hospital/old folks home work isn't it?

PT/Dietician is where it's at! I don't know if being JUST a dietician is in high demand, but since nutrition and exercise go hand in hand, all of my clients want me to write diets for them. True, the other option is probably hospital/old folks home type work which I COULDN'T do!!!

yes, being JUST and RDA is in high demand.

Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist with a cert in nutrition, which you can get in a weekend. Being a registered dietician is what requires college. I've got the CHEK Institute Nutrition Level 1 cert and it was good, plus another generic one. The only difference is that RD's can prescribe specific diets, most often for special populations in hospitals and nursing homes like people said. Nutritionists can't - they can just give "recommendations".

The only thing is, you don't want to get into prescribing specific diets for people. It takes a TON of work and 90% of the time they won't follow it anyway. Learn to make simple recommendations and learn the basics so that you can help them out. You're only making about $30 an hour and RD's make a lot more than that, so it justifies the extra work - but for a PT it simply isn't worth it. If I have a client who really wants to get a specific diet I refer them out or tell them about places like Weight Watchers who will give them resources. Or refer them to sites like fitday.com so they can track their calories.
