This might be of ineterst to some of you. (And if it isn't, ignore it)
I was being interviewed by a guy who's writing a book on the history of steroid use and he had just gotten of the phone with Don Howorth. Don is 68 and still in great shape. Don said prior to the 65 Mr. America his daily diet consisted of 2 pounds of red meat a day, a dozen eggs and a gallon of cream! (He does admit it was excessive, but he looked pretty damn good.) He also trained 3 hours a day. (Also excessive, but...)
When it came to drug use, Don was up front. He admitted to smoking pot and hash. He'd even get high before doing a show. : ) He also said he did DOUBLE the recommended dosage of D-bol. He took 20 mgs a day.
On the other end of the scale, Bill Pearl who is now in his 70's and going strong, admitted that if he was competing today, he'd be taking what everyone else is taking in order to beat them. So it isn't so much that these guys were angels, it was just a different time. And maybe there's something to be learned from it.
