Nothing will ever top QUAKE

Nothing.

quake 3 sucked. they fucked up the railgun royally in that game. the mechanics blew. Most quake 1 and quake 2 vets quit the game all together (like myself) or never transitioned.

quake was classic but a little too jerky. However given it's time that was expected. I kind of sucked with the rocket launcher in quake 1 but was one of the best around in quake 2.

quake 2 was the best by far. I'm not sayin that because i used to be one of the best players on the planet(no joke..i was #4 in the world for awhile in the now disbanded Professional Gaming League),but it just had fair maps and weapons and smooth gameplay. the railgun took a fuckload of skill, and wasnt cheap. the only thing that was gay as fuck was the hyperblaster, which would lag the shit out of you.

I lost a huge tournament match to one of the best quake 1 players ever because of that fuckin gun. He flew from cali to NYC to run on a t3 line there, and i had my ISDN connection from NJ. I was up 2 or 3 kills with less than 5 minutes left and then he lagged the fuck out of me with it, and then i respawned RIGHT in front of him and lagged again because he was using that gun. he fuckin hid the rest of the time after he went up, and i lost by 1. what pisses me off is the guy who that won the tournament and 15k or so (might have been more), was a guy i used to beat 1 on 1 fairly often.

No shit you were a "professional" Quake player? Damn man that's tight. I was surprised to hear you say Quake 3 sucked though, still see a ton of people playing that, or Quake Live (which is based off 3).

Also, a lot of good classics being mentioned in this thread. Golden age of PC gaming.

it was a pretty cool experience. And to know i could beat or at least compete with the best of the best was pretty awesome. took a fuckload of time out of my life though. when quake 2 started to fade out i retired and decided i wanted to be a normal HS kid and party and fuck bitches.

There were a couple of the top tier guys who had my number though....Makaveli was tough as shit to beat, even when he had a high ping. Never actually beat him 1 on 1 but stayed close. I think makaveli was one of the top guys who still made the jump to quake 3. Thresh retired....that chink used to piss me the fuck off. he was inhumanely good...definitely the michael jordan of pro gaming. My boy Kurt(immortal) almost beat him in the PGL finals at E3 back in 98. The only E3 i've ever been to, it was sick.

the only thing i wish they had done back then was also do clan tournaments. we had the best clan on the east coast, second only in the country to Death Row (which was thresh's clan, located on the west coast). clan matches were really fun, and you needed alot of cohesion to do well. man...we would have made some serious coin if they sponsored that back then. it wasn't until a couple of years later they started

That sounds like it was a hell of a time. Quake MP is legendary. What do you think of Fatal1ty, where would he rank among those you played against?

Btw, I picked up GoW 3 tonight....wait til you play the opening battle, it lasts through the whole first level (on Gaia the Titan). Simply redefines what "epic" means in a video game. Damn near capable of hijacking this Quake thread to be honest lol.

You can watch most of it here

damn lol. i been so cracked out to video games the past week during my spring break im scared to go out and buy it. i would have done the same thing you did but i have so much shit to do. I never played the original GOW because i sold my ps2 buy the time those game out. so i bought GOW collection a couple of months back and wanted to finish the GOW 2 before it came out. i beat GOW like the first week or so i got the game but didnt have time to finish 2.
also beat heavy rain twice (BUY THIS GAME), and *finally* started and got pretty far into assassin's creed II which i've had since like november but never played. fantastic game, but heavy rain was the game that blew me away. best experience i've ever had playing a video game

fatal1ty actually never even played quake 1 or quake 2, at least not professionally or at least he wasnt good enough to be noticed. he was a nobody. it wasn't until Q3 that he became what he became. he took thresh's spot.
Some people are just better with different engines. the q3 engine was pretty different and for whatever reason he did well with it.

Yeah I will eventually get Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls in on the back of my mind too.

So Calveless you've basically been a professional PC gamer, and more recently neck deep it seems in console games. What's your take on the two, and what do you overall prefer?

I personally think the PC platform as a whole for gaming can bring an untouchable experience if you take the time for it, but that there are so many high quality console titles out, especially now, that they really make me forget about when I'll need to upgrade for the next bloated, unoptimized PC game. Never again will I buy numerous graphics cards/CPU's within a fraction of a console generation trying to max out a PC game like Crysis. It looks amazing but I've learned to wait out the bs lol.

For what its worth, I've been gaming since the age of 5 and I'm now 33 years old. I've had every console from Atari 2600 through the 80's and 90's with the NES, Master System, Genesys, Turbographix16, Sega Dreamcast, Sega 32x (lol what a joke), Jaguar, Super NES, Nintendo64, PS1/2/3, Panasonic 3DO and the Xbox. My first PC I played on was a Commodore 64 a friend and I played Zork and Jumpman. The first PC I ever bought with my chore money was an Amiga 2000HD which I thought was an amazing gaming PC in 1989/90. At age 19 I think the PC hit its mark with games like Diablo, Star Craft, and War Craft (notice who the genre defining game creators were).

The PC really came into its own with the release of Ultima Online in 1997. You really got a sense of what online gaming could become. You started to build games that had a self sustaining economy and at one point the value of gold in UO's virtual economy was worth more on ebay than some small countries actual currency. Other than MMORPG's and some first person shooters, I think consoles have PC's beat in the gaming industry.

I'm kinda like you Hansel, I'll see a game that takes advantage of the newest, latest and greatest graphics cards/CPUs and I immediate start building my new hardware setup on Newegg. As I get older and have a kid, my gaming time has been cut by 3/4 and its not worth the cost, time, and effort any more for me to build my dream PC when I can get everything from HP or Dell (Area51) for a fraction for the same or better cost. Until my son is old enough that I can teach him how to do that stuff and have a bonding experience with him building a new PC, I think consoles are the way to go.

In the next few years TV and consoles are starting to integrate everything that us "techies" use to be able to do first by hooking up our PC to our HDTV. The wife and I live off streaming Netflix on the PS3 Friday and Saturday nights. It seems now even waiting 1 day for a movie to come in the mail is much too long. As 100MB/s download speeds begin to become the norm over the next few years I can't wait to see what sort of streaming media content and online gaming will have to offer.

Next on my list of games after GoW3 which I purchased today is Star Wars The Old Republic MMORPG. I think this will be an epic online game.

Nice avatar Capt. FT. Have you played the first two? I haven't had a chance to dig into GoW 3 yet past the first boss, but this weekend hopefully I'll see how the trilogy concludes.

No I didn't. GoW 1 and 2 came out when I was busy raiding Blackwings Lair in WoW every night of the week. I was a huge WoW head from 2004 to 2008 and didn't play much else.

Now I have a 1 year old and everyone kept telling me..."Oh you have to play GoW 1 and 2 first so you understand the story." Nah, that's what the internet is for, I can read up on it. I don't have time to play two old games just so I can play the game I want to play.

I'm through the second boss, but I'm running through on easy mode. Maybe spending 45 min a day before I have to pick up my son from daycare. This game is definitely a lot of fun. I'm into the whole Spartan/300/Spartacus/Greek Mythology feel. To be honest, if I hadn't been watching the Starz Spartacus series I would have thought the violence was over the top, but as the disclaimer says on Spartacus, "It is to depict an accurate representation of the times".

I suppose to you kill mythological Gods without ripping their heads off with your bare hands.

I think I'll keep my cutting diet going through to October and be Kratos for Halloween.

I can't wait to fight Hades. His was probably the best boss fight in the first game as far as sheer intensity goes. My controller was coated with sweat after that one lol. Isn't it kind've a walk in the park on easy though? One of the best parts about playing GoW is the old school gameplay and the visceral challenge it brings, where you breathe a sigh of relief after downing each boss.

damn CW i didnt know you were such a gamer, i have been sponsered in a few games and played a lot competitively, DoTA was sponsered, top ranked Wow Arena team on my server, CS 1.6 top 20 US team. Now I just play poker, so when I actualy try to get better i get PAID

i don't think its worth it spending retarded amount of money on video cards and processors, which i used to do many years ago. but first person shooters are definitely better for the computer in general. i havent played a pc game in awhile because i havent had a desktop for a good bit.

i just *recently* got back into console gaming at the end of the summer when i got a ps3 finally.for the past few years, the only thing i played was madden and sports games and it was usually at a friend's house. The gamecube was the last system i bought before i got a 360 for a few months (Then sold it) last year.

that shit takes way too much time out of my life. its nice to go on a video game binge once in awhile, but man..shit is addictive
