Not so deep Squat

i agree. can't talk bad about the weight, but knee wraps for that range of motion?

bb'ers are funny...

I like the vid of ronnie coleman front squatting though!

That's ridiculous, especially when you compare it to that oly-lift video floating around of the guy who's probably 210 doing over 600 ass-to-grass like it's nothing. And this BB'r is freaking HUGE but needs wraps to do not-quite-parallel squats. Geesh. I don't mean to bash anyone, but he just looks like a useless pile of muscle.

And yet that is what a good 70% of this board wants to look like. Size over function.

BTW - that is Marcus Ruhl.

Watching a DVD of the 2003 Mr O. I noticed alot of the bodybuilders in the weeks preceding the contest used a not-quite-full ROM on some of the stuff they did, esp. the compound movements. I don't know, but my guess is that pre-contest they're looking to get a good pump but not stress the muscle for presentation reasons. And especially not to injure themselves close to payday. This might be what Marcus is doing.

bad motion or not, this guy knows what he is doing.
See that's the irony of it - he probably doesn't. Hard work coupled with amazing genetics and drugs can do a lot with shitty training. Hell if some of the stories I've heard are true, some of the top pros (Flex Wheeler comes to mind) really don't even train very hard or with much in the way of a work ethic.

Again, not all, but some.

that guy is what, 260 pounds plus? by my count, that is 200 kilos, 440lbs. a man half his size and weight can backsquat that full range for doubles with relative ease. there are a couple of canadian 85kg weightlifters that hit that consistently with full range front squats. this is all of course, unequipped (no belt, no wraps, no one of wearing of one's sister's pants)

is that marcus ruhl? i seem to recall him having that dvd preview where he "leg presses" like a thousand pounds on the almost-parallel-to-floor setup.

what a joke.

Markus Rhul is one of the freakiest (and best in that category) body builders of all time and appart from that appears to be an inteligent and genuinely nice guy. That said:

Those are something between 1/3 and 1/2 squats and he looks rather shakey. It goes to show that you do not need to train well to be big.

Let it make you guys feel better when you see guys at the gym who look pretty good, but lift like morons - they could look amazing if they trained as well as you!

That was truly pathetic. I stopped watching shortly after he put the wraps on.

Maybe he had a knee problem and wanted to work something very specific which I'm currently unable to identify. At least it wasn't being done in a Smith.

did you guys ever consider he was actually doing half squats...?

you guys sure are judgemental without knowing all the facts...

the guy is fucking huge, so who's gonna argue with his training...?

i'm SURE Marcus can do a much deeper squat than that, so i'm not going to sit here and trash talk him over this vid...

and he needed padding.

why would anyone video tape themselves doing half squats? its definitely not something to brag about.

plus, with such little weight for his size at that, was that maybe 1.5x bodyweight? plus he was shaking like a leaf walking it out...

there is something to be said for functional strength...and relative size.

he's built a tremendous amount of muscle, thats for sure, which should impress most of the members here.

in the wise words of Scot Mendelson, "A ferrari with no motor."

I own Markus's second DVD (which is really great to see!) but he seems to use exclusiely machines for everything:

Smith presses for chest
Machine press for delts
Leg press for thights
Bicep Machine
Lat Pulldown
Cable Row...

That might explain it. Too much machine work leading to too little functional strength.

I saw a post from BiggT suggesting that a 900lb leg press was about equivalent to a 360lb squat and that a 360 squatter should be able to do the leg press. The guy who trained just leg press, though would get crushed by a 360 squat.

Probably, but based on the vid I think he'd need to lower the weight ;)

Not to bag on BBers, I think I've seen a vid of Coleman do 800 below parallel squat, with gear on though.

Also, what's up with waggling the thigh muscles to show them off? I've seen that a few times from BBers.

Lol. Berry DeMay was famous for the leg waggle. It was quite striking since he'd do the waggle and then suddenly tense the quads. I used to practice it. ;)

The worst is the Olympic women speed skaters. THat shit is GROSS when the wiggle 'em out.

i've seen all the ProBB's do the quad waggle...

just showing how much meat is on there, i suppose...

how much weight was on the bar for the last set he did...? looked to be well over 500+ pounds...?

the bar had:

2 x 15 + 2 x 25 + 2x 10 each side = 90kg x 2 + bar 15? =

195kg or 430lbs for 9 or 10 half reps

Hardly world class for a 280lb (?) guy!

I love the way German weights manufacturers all seem to use their own size plates and bars...

Faith is restored.

When he shrugged the weight off his shoulders it was almost cartoon-like as it seemed to pause for a moment in mid-air before it crashed down. Marunde is impressive. 88 megs video BTW.

while moving that kind of weight that deep is impressive in it's own right, i'm not "wowed" by that...

the Oly lifter vid wowed me, but this guy seemed to have a bit too much bounce,or is that the way ATF is supposed to be done...?

not sure what the point is of taking 12-15 seconds between reps is either... i guess i'm from a different school of training... maybe i should look into this one and give it a shot though...

thats how 20 rep squats are done. you take what you can do 10-12 reps with...and take it to 20.

if you are banging out pistonlike 20 rep squats...its too light.

Marcus enjoyed a well earned smoke after that hard set I'm sure.

sadly for every Dorian there's a hundred Ruhls.. genes and drugs are what it's all about

I just got the vid to work - I am really impressed - it's amazing to see 407 go up and down 20 times like that. Anyone else promise themselves that they are going to try those chinups next time they are in the gym (I'm actually eyeing up a bar on my internal balcony so I don't have to wait...)

407x20 really isn't all that impressive.

I did it with 415 and a belt several years ago.

*inserts obligatory pathetic remark about shoulder injury and "coulda been a contendah"*

Those chin-ups were scary. Most of the time when you see someone who is stronger than yourself lift things you just think that it's simply a matter of more weight. Every once in a while you see someone use their extra strength to do something you simply cannot do. I guess bending iron bars and rolling up frying pans fall into the same category.

I just tried those chinups after I'd warmed-up for my barbell rows and let me tell you: Fukin-ell they kick your ass! I could do two before I couldn't catch the bar. The thing is you have to really accelerate yourself to the top so that as you let go you still have some upward momentum. From there you have to grab the bar SO quickly because if you don't, then you cannot decelerate your fall, and you end up pulling the hell out of your lats at the bottom.

Perhaps I should try these at the start instead of the end of the workout as they are so explosive. But anyway, I weigh 220 now and that was a killer. That dude is up around 300lbs (I think) and must be uber-powerful at that movement.

I have seen this guy Jesse Marunde before in many worlds strongest man contests and he always finishes well. I was watching worlds strongest man few days ago on eurosport and they where squating this platform with sandbags on that weighed 1000 pounds,
Marios Pudranofskey (dont think i speld his name right but thats how it sounds) he is current worlds strongest man and he squated it for 9 reps. I must of missed Jesse's set but im sure he did good at this event also.

I think Marunde injured himself in one of the earlier events and had to drop out. We don't get nearly enough WSM on Eurosport but I think we might get a bit more Powerlifting over the next few months. Fingers crossed.

[/QUOTE]i thought that was the 407x20 rep squat set?

was looking for something with chinups?
He does a few chinups before attempting the squats and also some cleans i think

ps: i don't know to get that quote box thingy

Jesse finished 2nd overall in the finals in China this past October. Mariusz Pudzianowski won. Jesse impresses the hell out of me.

On Jesse's website he has pics and a vid of himself doing a 495lb behind-the-neck jerk, there are also plenty of other videos on the site of some amazing lifting clips from Jesse and others. Jesse takes A LOT of pride in his lifting and he won't even post any numbers without pics or vids to back them up. The guy is a class act, and has a big future in Strongman.

I watched the Markus Ruhl video for about 10 seconds and got so annoyed I had to close it out. As far as soft-core gay porn goes, I guess I can see people buying it, but as far as training goes, I thought it was fucking pathetic.

!!! soft-core gay porn !!!

HEY! I have the Markus Rhul DVD and I think it rocks, it's just a little German.
Anyway, I'm not gay - just ask my boyfriend.

LOL

After watching the video, do you think if Ruhl squatted ass to the grass all the time, do you think his legs would be bigger? His fuggin legs are huge, and he doesnt even do parallel squats.
