"Not Quite Cooperstown"

aurelius

New member
An American friend of mine and I were talking about those special series of baseball cards like "future stars" and "MVP" series that used to be included in regular packs. Well, we came up with a few of our own.

Not Quite Cooperstown

Could Have Been Great

Past Their Prime

Any addtions before I post some names?

could have been great will have D. Strawberry at the top of the list - what a dildo....

i remember buying a ton of phil plantier rookie cards thinking he was a surefire hall of famer.

i'd be shocked if anyone actually remembers him....

Good ones.

Could Have Been Great:
Phil Plantier
Strawberry

i still think kerry wood could be great. he IS only 25 and hasn't lost his stuff. between him and mark prior the cubs actually have the potential to do some damage in the next few years.

they'll screw it up, though.

plantier
B Ripken

Kerry Wood???

Stawberry was great in his days.

I could add: Dwight Gooden, Jose Canseco, Mitch Williams......

How about some names for the "Not Quite Coopertown" club?

I´ll light the fire:
Sammy Sosa

Sosa has 3 or 4 more years until he is out of his prime and he will have over 500 homers before the year is done. I wouldn't be so quick to add him to this list. I would bet anything that after he hangs them up he will be a sure bet inductee.

Runner..

Phil Plantier..left handed swinging hitter for the Boston Red Sox :)

I got a lot for you guys who were either really good and faded, or were touted as the future.

Mike Greenwell
Eric Davis
Chris Sabo
Frank Thomas
Mo Vaughn
Walt Weiss
Hensley "bam bam" Muelens
Ricky Jordan
Dwight Smith
Jerome Walton

I don't know about that bro.

what do you mean? he has like close to 400 career homeruns..

but he has been on the ballot for a while now without any votes..i think its too late for him to get in cooperstown..i think many writers have already forgotten him. Plus his braves teams were shitty.

Could have been:
Albert Belle

Past their Prime:
Greg Maddux
Roberto Alomar

technically i suppose maddux is past his prime....but cut the man some slack!

he's second in the NL with a 2.63 ERA right now!!!!

good names, kak.
greenwell was my boy.

11-5 era = 2.63

I would Kill to be that past my priime

Don't get me wrong, in his prime he was the one of the best to ever pitch. He is past his prime and still one of the best pitchers in the league.

are you guys trying to tell me that Maddux isnt a lock to get in???

Geez..tough crowd today...

hey runner, I loved the 1986-1993 Redsox teams..

Bruce Hurst, Ellis burks, dwight evans, jim rice, rich gedman, Marty Barnett, spike owen, wade boggs..roger clemens..

and of course, Greenwell was my fav. player

Not Quite Coopertown:

Gary Carter (is he in already?)

not yet. he was rejected twice I think. First he blamed the Expos for their lack of support and last time the Mets.

does anyone remember Brian Taylor, the yankees gave this guy a huge signing bonus. Magazines as well as baseball cards hyped him up like no other and what happened to him? He was never heard from

Also does anyone remember Phillie Tyler Green. HAd a great season in 96, all star, good record. Threw to many knuckle curves and blew his shoulder to shreds.

sounds like the perfect "Not Quite Cooperstown" addition.

How about Jimmy Rice?

Sosa is going to the Hall.

Brien Taylor - another kid that Steinbrenner rushed through the system. why not add Paul wilson to your list - former Mets #1 overall still trying to hang on.....

How about...

Bill Buckner

1986_ws.jpg

In a now infamous play, 1B Bill Buckner lets Mookie Wilson's ground ball pass under his legs. If he had made the play, the Red Sox would have won the World Series. (Globe Staff File Photo)

Remember these guys that were supposed to be badasses:
Nigel Wilson - Marlins 1st pick
Brian Taylor - black Yankees pitcher
David Nied - Rockies 1st pick
JT Snow - Bombed as a Yankee
All of their rookie cards were worth something at some point. I dont think any of them still play except JT Snow.

Hall of Fame: To whoever said otherwise, Sosa & Maddux are both sure locks

Bo Jackson was definitely not a great player or could have been a great player. He was a good football player, but a .260, 30 HR type player. Darryl Strawberry & Doc Gooden are both sad cases. At one point, Strawberry was on pace to hit 585 homers. Doc Gooden once struck out nearly 300 batters in one season. But both let drugs ruin their careers (both of which had many many "2nd" chances).

Bigguns7 - Robin Ventura is and always has been a solid player, why mention him? Averages like 20-30 HRs every year.
