Well let's see... China shares an approx. 1000 mile border with N. Korea and would likely be flooded with refugees causing instability in their country. Chinese feel an obligation to side with N. Korea and does God only knows what. Russia sides with China (which I believe they would). Fallout crosses into S. Korea turning some European countries against the US (we all know who they'd be). In your little scenario, most Islamic countries are hit (this would really be the reason Russia would become involved).

What I'm suggesting is... your outlined chain of cleancut events is very naive. Once nukes start flying, they'll be flying everywhere. If N. Korea were so stupid as to fire a nuclear bomb at N. America (the piece of crap would probably go off course and hit Vancouver), the response would/should be for the US to use conventional weapons in return. I think the US military could handle N. Korea without risking fullout nuclear war.

I was imagining....If I were a madman with one nuclear missle and wanted to create the USA as much pain as possible, what would I do....
Set it off in Manhattan? Washington D.C.?
No, I think I would detinate it high over the California Sierra Nevadas.
That would render hundreds of square miles of snowpack radioactive.
That snowpack represents most of the California water supply...poisoned.
San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, San Diego, plus the entire California farming valley...no water...for years.
Imagine the rest of America having to absorbe the former California residents fleeing to other cities. We'd be overwhelmed.
