North Korea is stupid

North Korea isn't going to attack the USA. They know that would mean certain desctruction for them as well. It's the same thing that kept the USA and USSR from going at it. Mutual destruction was assured. N. Korea just wants to play mind games with their threats right now.

MAD is fine when dealing with (mostly) reasonable people on both sides, but Kim Jung Il is somewhat of a mental defective. Plus his country is an absolute mess, so he may decide to sell that missile(s) to somebody willing to fire it off.

Yep, I think he is more of a madman than hussein.

Who is under thirty here? I fully understand the implications being and engineer and scientist as well as over thirty and a Marine.

It is a tool an we use it either as a deterrent or as a front line weapon. It ain't pretty, well... the mushroom cloud and colors are, but the after math isn't, but gotta do what ya gotta due.

(hypothetically) So you understand that it wouldn't just be a matter of N. Korea firing a nuke and the US obliterating them in return? You understand that Chinese & Russian nukes would probably start flying (not to mention India & Pakistan likely lobbing nukes at each other). This is not a nice comfy Cold War anymore... things are extremely unstable.

BTW, don't ever trust the Russians.

Sorry about the assumption on your age, but your comments appeared very naive & simplistic. Afterall, you did say "I hope that dickhead launches a missile at us!". Hardly seams like something a scientist/Marine would "hope" for.

They were meant to be simplistic and off cuff to ellicit responses, but in reality, I don't thing that Russia or China would do or say much, if N. Korea or for that matter a terrorist attacked us with a nuclear weapon.

Why would they risk global destruction, when we would have every right to annihilate the perpetrator of the attack in that instance.

Well let's see... China shares an approx. 1000 mile border with N. Korea and would likely be flooded with refugees causing instability in their country. Chinese feel an obligation to side with N. Korea and does God only knows what. Russia sides with China (which I believe they would). Fallout crosses into S. Korea turning some European countries against the US (we all know who they'd be). In your little scenario, most Islamic countries are hit (this would really be the reason Russia would become involved).

What I'm suggesting is... your outlined chain of cleancut events is very naive. Once nukes start flying, they'll be flying everywhere. If N. Korea were so stupid as to fire a nuclear bomb at N. America (the piece of crap would probably go off course and hit Vancouver), the response would/should be for the US to use conventional weapons in return. I think the US military could handle N. Korea without risking fullout nuclear war.

I don't think it is naive at all. If say Iraq nuked India, or Pakistan was nuked by India, (hypothetically) Or lets say Englans was nuked.

Don't you think they have the right to respond in kind? I sure as hell know that if I were attacked with a 9mm, I would use my 45. Or as they say in the cop world, you don't have to start at the bottom of the force contiuum.

As for China and Russia, they do not have the means to carry a sustained conflict with us, certainly by retaliating against us for exercising our right to self defense and preservation. Nor would the rest of the world

As for South Korea? What really do they offer that we can't obtain from the Philippines or elsewhere.

China at the moment does not seem interested in supporting N. Korea in its current dilema. In fact they have condemed them for what they are doing.

Hmmm, why use conventional weapons and deplete our reserves, on one 50 megaton on downtown N. Korea would solve the whole think in 1 second. The fallout would not be as bad as you predict, it would still be messy, but the hydrogen bomb is a fairly clean bomb and 99% of its lethal radiation is released at detonation and passes through everything. What is left is dust and such that may or may not settle and cause problems elsewhere. Didn't seem to matter when we were testing these things.

Of course the US would have the right to respond to such actions in any way the gov. decides. But would it be a smart move for the long term stability of the planet? Nope.

I think you're probably blustering a bit, so I won't take your disregard for the political backlash too seriously. Don't underestimate the GD Chinese or Russians.

Does the entire country of N. Korea have 1 downtown? j/k I know you said you don't care about S. Korea, but Seoul (10 mill ppl) is only 60km away from the border with N. Korea. Hey, they did give the world the Hyundai Pony. LOL
