Normal vs. Military style push ups

I have always done my push-ups face-down. For me perfect form means the tip of my nose and the tip of my dick both just touch the floor and my back is straight.

My friend who went through boot camp said in the army they make you do them facing forward.

I tried them both ways today and found that the military way was easier. For some reason they made my body align in such a way that my torso touched the ground sooner so the ROM was less than for "my" push ups.

Other than that what are the differences? Is there an advantage to doing them military style? Do they stress different muscles?

RE:push ups

Same here.........i used to always touch the tip of my nose. I read somewhere that by looking foward, you can align your body better (as you say) so now i tend to do them that way.

A couple of questions for you; do you vary the speed of your sets at all? sometimes i do them slowly, other days i power out a set of really fast push ups......i'm not sure if it makes any difference.

What do you think of those push up bars that you can buy? i read that the best (or the most natural) platform for the push up is the flat facing down palms....i find it easier with the bars, even though bars allow you a greater stretch going down....so i went back to the 'normal' way...

Also, have you used that power-push up device? it's like a rubber tube that stretches around your back to add resistance to the push up......i think it's just as good to stick back pack filled with plates on my back!

There's really no difference in "normal" or "military". just whatever you like. FM 21-20 says (& I paraphrase) body generally on line from head to heel.
I've never touched my nose, my chest (or belly) gets there first.
I've seen literally thousands of different versions of pushups. just use whatever works for you, & call them Lumberg pushups!

I'll count the cadence, you count the repetitions.
IN CADENCE, EXERCISE!

One, two, three, ONE!
One, two, three, TWO!.....

LMAO!

Well I think I'll do them normal for now. I'm coming back from a broken elbow so I'm just doing bodyweight pushups. Once I get up to 4 sets of 30 "Lumberg" push ups I'm gonna switch to DB BP.

Try it my way once, you will get maybe 75 percent of the reps you can get "military" style.
