noob question, clean pull vs. deadlift?

the best i can find using google is a before and after picture of a guy doing a pull... and it doesnt look any different than a deadlift. My routine calls for pulls, which ive just been substituting with various back exercises, but i'd like to learn to do them properly

any help is much appreciated

They do look similar but I believe the difference lies in the fact that the clean pull, like most all Olympic lifts is explosive. That is, once you clean the bar to the knees, you then pull the bar as fast and high as possible to a point mid-way on your torso. With a deadlift you're merely cleaning the bar to a lock-out point: your body is rigid and the weight is stationary and under control. It's more strictly a power move in that you're then developing the strength of your back to pull the major weight- which happens once you've cleaned past your knees- instead of your upper body complex to generate explosive force. There's a good article called The Deadlift at the top of this forum that explains the deadlift in detail. I often read it . There's also links to various videos in the Training Vault at the top of the Weightlifting forum that are useful for a comparison.

They are an OLY movement for the most part and as previously described here the bar takes a rapid path from floor to chest. Most OLY lifters use them to train for their competitive lifts I believe. I would take a search around the OLY lifting forum. Those guys are sure to let you know where to go to get some pics or a vid.

yea sorry i should have specified, i've been lifting for a little over 4 years, but recently my fitness coach for rugby gave us a specific workout to follow which had a few oly lifts on it that i hadn't done before.

anyhow, i've seen a "high pull" before where you do this lateral bb shoulder raise basically... so by the sounds of it a high pull = what everyone else calls a pull

ok i think im good then!

thanks!

Yes. High pull is just pulling higher than other type pulls. A clean pull isn't a high pull. Obviously you'll use a bit less weight to get the bar higher.

Do you know how to correctly perform cleans? A clean pull is the part of the clean. The pull does not go above the waste.

Also, with a dead, you will lean back as far as possible, staying on your heels

With a clean, you will be more on your toes and probably use more quads
