NFL players lifting during season (how often)

How often do most NFL players lift during the season? I heard only twice a week to keep as much muscle as possible throughout the season so they don't overtrain? anyone have any idea about this?

It depends on the player. Some players dont lift at all, others go 3-4 times a week for maintaince purposes. A lot of these guys are injured too so they spend time either in complete rest or rehab work.

if some guys don't lift at all, how do they keep their muscle...just good genetics.....or will juicing w/out lifting keep what you have....

They will train during season with the team trainer (most of the time) during this itme it might only be 1-3 days a wk with reduced volume for maintance. As far as intensity goes, it can still range from light to heavy.

So can most people maintain all that muscle mass (linebackers like ray lewis and brian urlacher) with only 1 or 2 days a week training on lite volume?

I find it hard to believe that freaky lookin running backs like preist holmes or ricky williams can look the way they do in season and not train extremely hard....

All the pushin'and shovin' they do on the field, I beleive it.

wouldn't all the 'pushin and shovin' tire out and burn muscle though? it's got to be hard for them to not overtrain...

Their bodys know the type of stress demanded on them, they train like they play yr around. They've been able to cope with it for yrs and their its basicly become second nature to them, but that still doesnt leave out the fact of fatigue and tiredness they experience.

Most players do lose weight durning the season, depending on the physical condition. They bulk up in the off season, so what you during the season, is already a downsized version. These guys are natural atheltes with great genetics. It may seem impossible that they dont lift, but football is a pretty strenuous sport. Just the on field work keeps them in pretty good shape.

ever see what a football player eats?

that's one part of it.

and until you actually play the sport at that level you dont realize how much you actually work your muscles in practice so that 1-3 days a week is plenty.

most of the on field work they do is also high intensity/max effort/interval type stuff too...that helps..think about it...balls out, then a 30 second rest etc.
