Newbie - keto question...

Tonytoo

New member
Hey all I'm a newbie to dieting and bodybuilding.. I am 25yo, 5'8" - 188lbs. maybe 140lbs of lean tissue mass?

right now I am eating:
- one breakfast with like 2 whole eggs and 5 -6 egg whites.
- 7 - 11oz of lean chicken/fish/red meat. 3 - 4x a day. (if I use olive oil to cook 1-2 tlbs a day total max)
- and a pure whey protein shake (35-45g or protein) for a snack right before I go to bed/post work out.
theres not much fat in there as I can't control myself with peanut butter or almonds or damn near anything actually.
I do drink a lot of coffee. No creamer usually, but if I do max 1 oz., max 1-2 oz a day. maybe 4 - 5 12oz/16oz cups a day as I am a coffee whore. - yeh for college.

I try to lift 4 - 5 times a week plus 5-15 minutes of medium heavy cardio 5-6x a week.

Class in the morning, work in the evening, come home, go to gym, shower, sleep, repeat. My day is a desk job, or a student. not much activity.

I seem to hit ketosis (tested by ketostix) off and on through out the day. but nothing solid. why is that?

Tony.

im a newb also but if i had to guess i would say the coffee is affecting your metabolism somehow and causing mixed responses. I would definitely cut out the coffee or maybe even even out the intake through out the day pills or some other type of slow release mechanism.
also i noticed you said 3 or 4 or 1 or 2 quite a few times in your post maybe sticking to a more exact regiment will give you more even results
hope this helps

Add more fat to your diet your diet should be like 45 40 5 fat/protein/carbs use heavy cream over creamer in your coffee limit your Cardio to slow jogging/walking

It's probably due to one of two things. Either the keotones have been burned as energy (which is good) or the result could br diluted from high water intake...either way, most people that I've followed that are into hard core keto, don't use ketostix due to these reasons. Eventually, you will get to where you can tell when you are in keto...feeling, taste in your mouth, etc.

Also with the ketostix, either you ARE in ketosis or you are not...it doesn't matter if it shows trace amounts or full blown...

agreed, i'm not into the keto thing because It makes for terrible workouts. If your are burning more calories than you are eating you will lose weight. But if you insist on this type of diet you need to include more fat in it from sources like almonds, olive oil, and flax oil. It doesnt take much because fat is dense in calories. If you are depleting your body of carbs AND fat then it will start storing the fat you have. If you are new to all of this I would stick to a more traditional diet of around 40/30/30 and as long as your caloires are low enough you will see results and feel much better all around. Save low carb/carb cycling for when you need it imo

Thank you all for responding

@qbwankenobi
I have finally gotten my diet a little bit more regular, almost exactly 5 meals a day all roughly the same size. usually 4 - 5 cooked ozs of the leanest top roast I can find. some meals I will have 1oz of provolone cheese added to it, but not every meal. usually just 2 or 3 meals. or I will have fish fried in olive oil. but still, I am aiming at keeping every meal between 400-500 calories almost exactly. - I'm trying to get that steady and regular thing down. But I am still not really able to introduce nuts and peanut butter and other lean fat sources... I just find I don't stop once I start mixing them in.

about the coffee - I have since cut out of the heavy cream. and drinking so much of it. maybe 2 cups in the morning and then a cup or a cup and a half before I work out. my question will it still help with overall dieting/fat loss, right? I mean it is a mild stimulant? or will it cause me to burn up muscle from something like cortisol levels? (yes I am really newb at this dieting thing)Otherwise I'll switch to like green tea or something.

@jamesbiz
Not 100% sure what you mean by lean tissue. I would say it is everything that isn't fat. - for what it is worth I went down and got myself measured in a bod pod. 19% bf and 184.5lbs. that was like a week or two ago. it said I have around 149.5lbs of fat free mass and my BMR is around 1800 calories. I doubt much has changed on that stat as I sort of stopped worrying about my diet/gym time during this last round of midterms.

@nekkehd
do I have to include the 5% for carbs?
if I try to lean my diet out to 45/40 fat/protein, it would make about 21g of fat and 42g of protein a meal.
x 5 would roughly make 1800 calories a day.
is it still basically OK if I eat around 30/70% fat/protein? last few days I have been averagingaround 10g of fat and 60g of protein a meal. it's easy and conveinent to grab 4 - 5 ozs of cooked steak in a sandwhich baggy and go to work. - my thoughts were the body probably needs the extra protein if your lifting regularly?

@jimmyhav
you mean that brain dead feeling up stairs in my mental forelobe? I notice I feel a little bit "burnt out" whenever I am in ketosis, but what taste do you mean? I only notice a taste if I drink a whey protein shake, usually about an hour or two later I will get a distinct taste. and btw, thanks! I didn't know that I figured it was like the more purple the better, half the time it is a light shade of pink or ... not at all and I KNOW haven't been cheating or eating ANY carbs for a couple of solid days (4+)

@gymjunkie09
so the added fat keeps my metabolism from shutting down? or ... ? I guess I'm not really understanding? can you explain more please. and yes I would like to consider this a time I really need it, I would like to drop another 20lbs in 10 weeks. (I know, it's not going happen, especially with my discipline and general dieting/exercising knowledge but still a solid 10 - 15 would be totally cool)

... Thanks again guys for all the posts. as a side note I have been losing some weight, but mostly adding muscle over the last 3 weeks? all my lifts have gone up and I look noticeably bigger (mainly because I haven't been following my diet), I think qbwankenobi is dead on I need to be much more regular in both my diet and exercise patterns

Exactly.......if u are only eating protein then your body will hold on to the fat u have and store it. Your fat intake is a key factor in a keto diet. If u insist on sticking with this type if diet then type ckd in the search engine and study that and u will see how important your fat intake is when on this type of diet. I Havnt used this diet myself but I'm gonna give it a shot over he summer when I'm shooting for 6% bf

so I went looking online somewhat and all I read was that your body has a hard time producing ketones if you eat too much protein at first? I don't really understand I know I have dropped quite a bit of weight just eating mostly protein? why the extra fats?

do you happen to have a link with better information? the forum search function wouldn't work for me.. (though the links at the bottom of related pages did... go figure.)

...

(edited) oh.. so its more fats for first few weeks tell your body gets use to using ketones instead of producing glucose via gluconeogenesis? what about if I am pissing purple on a ketostix? can I switch back to solid protein then?
