new york apartments

my brother wants to move to NYC with a friend soon, and they are looking for an apartment. i think they would rather commute out of north jersey than live in manhattan, but i am not sure what they have decided yet.

anyway, they don't want to spend over $2000 a month (preferably 1200-1500 a month), for a 2 bedroom where they can keep 2 cars. What all town(s) can they live that aren't infested with crime that are within 30-60 minutes of manhattan. preferably a town listed in www.apartmentguide.com

Well you will not find anything in NYC under 2000 bucks. Having a car is a liability as well. Then again, you would have to drive into NYC and it would end up costing you a ton to park there.

Best person to ask is Jae. His GF has an apartment there and it costs 14K PER MONTH! I kid you not.

yes... that is fourteen thousand. that is not a typo.

I lived in the West Village just 2 years ago, and paid 2 grand for a small one bedroom walk-up, and received renewal increases of 400 bucks each time I renewed--minimal.

Joisey eh?

I had suggested this place to a friend of mine that was moving back from Cali - he never did move back but I would still look at it.

Westchester

I also think Brooklyn has a quite a few new happening spots in Red Hook, Williamsburg and Park Slope.

They could do Queens - but I'm personally not wild about it (family issues) - but THAT is just me, there are some nice places in Queens but everything has changed so in the past ten years - who knows.

Ask DOT - he would probably have a few good ideas for your brother.

Velvett is correct about Park Slope, desirable place to live.

So is Brooklyn Heights but it often has Manhattan prices.

I think NY is the most expensive city to live in, anywhere. I could be wrong... it is in the US, at least. You probably knew that already.

i think boston & chicago are roughly the same. according to scrappy it is $2700 or so in boston. i know that 6 years ago towns surrounding silicon valley charged 10x what the suburbs charged for housing.
