New Strong Island Steroid Article

Rick Collins

I was recently interviewed by Beth Aldrich, a reporter for the Long Island Press doing a piece on steroids. What may have been a typical "scare story" turned around after she read a copy of LEGAL MUSCLE. Intrigued, she convinced her editors to redirect the piece and then took a confrontational approach, challenging the criminalization of anabolics! Check out the piece online. The fact that her editors allowed her to take this angle is inspiring. Perhaps other journalists will follow her lead, and go further still...

great article rick--thanks for pointing it out--
slightly off topic but is the Long Island Press the paper that is thinking about taking newsday head on?

Great article!

Yes it is. A few years ago, every reporter who called me asked me to connect them with a juiced-up teenager so they could write another "scare-the-bejesus-out-of-the-gullible-masses-because-steroids-will-kill-you" piece. Now several of them have pitched stories in line with LEGAL MUSCLE's tenets to their editors, and they've been approved and published. (Interestingly, I'm told that an increasing number of journalists are ordering the book.) Beth Aldrich actually brazenly criticized that most sacred cow: the sports anti-doping lobby! Maybe there's just a hint of momentum building...

Nice article. It’s cool that your book had such a profound influence on the writer.

On a lighthearted side note, while reading that article I couldn’t help thinking of one notorious Long Island resident who was an admitted steroid user—Joey Buttafuoco and his Long Island Lolita, Amy Fisher. :o

It's good to see the media taking a proactive step toward educating the public, rather than trying to scare them into buying more papers/magazines.

Information, and reeducation to the public to tell them the TRUTH... is the one thing that can help "us" out in a huge way.

Rick, you are the pioneer brother.

The Long Island Press? I've never heard of it.

As an aside, I didn't recall seeing it in the piece, but I hope she didn't use the expression "Strong Island" when referring to AAS and the LI suburbs. The Strong Island Boys is the name of a very violent Long Island street gang. I'd hate to see AAS further besmirched by associating them with these street hoodlums.

Hey Rick/MikeD! ....MikeS here!

They are printing my commentary on that LongIsland Press article in the 7/24 issue, I believe. Robbie W from the magazine called me a couple days ago to OK it and ask a few questions. Look for it! I dont know if he will send a link to the page or if I will have to skim the whole publication to find it-I'll post a link if I find it, or you can if you see it. I asked that he (Robbie W) send me a link but dont know for sure if/when he will.

Unfortunately Ive been informed my commentary will only be published in the hard copy of the 7/24 issue, not the on line version. They are sending me a copy. Rick Im sure its local for you; you can pick one up if you like.
