New Puppy :)

We just got a new pup.

8 week old German boxer.

Right now he's about 10lbs, and just plain cute.

Anyone have any tricks for house training, obediance and things like that?

Thanks
Gymrat

Keep him caged up a lot. It sucks but it's the best way to house break him. Make sure you take him outside to relieve himself first thing whenever you take him out of the cage. Be sure to socialize him with lots of strangers and other dogs while he is young.

He went poop in his cage...hahaha

Our fault though, we didn't take him out soon enough, and his new doggie meds didn't help either.

If he pooped in his cage then the cage is too big. If the cage is the right size, the dog will instinctivle think of it as a den and will be totally comfortable in there. They will also not go to the bathroom in there. Like Latimer said, take him outside as soon as you let him out of the cage. It's worked for our dog.

I too have a boxer. They are great dogs. What is the difference with the German boxer. The way I trained minw was to just take him out every hour or so followed by a lot of praise. Whats his name?

rule of thumb... number of months in age equals how long he can "hold it"...

2.5 months (10 weeks)= every 2.5 hours he will need to wizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I have a 3 month english bulldog. She is now 20 lbs. Before I go to bed, I make sure to give her a walk and then lock her in the cage. I am not a morning person so she would poop in the cage and then bark until i get up and let her out. Things have gotten better but its alot of work. Vet also told me to walk her 5 minutes after she drank or ate which has also helped. Make sure you buy alot of toys cause they like to bite on things.

Also don't buy any of those training pads, regular newspaper would do fine. That was a waste of money on my part because she would chew up the pads instead of going on it. But I do recommend that you buy "Stay Off" spray which you can put on your carpet so that he doesn't go there. It has worked for me most of the time.

DevAng I have an eight yr. old english Bulldog female and she was a bitch to train. But now she is so laid back. Bulldogs are tough to train but well worth the effort. Lifter

Good luck with the pup. Whatever you do, don't teach it to bark (speak) when it wants something. Boxer's don't shut up once this is learned.

Something i've found funny is how my room mates dog is scared of the pup. This dog is a 3 year old lab, who normally is very pleasant and excited to be around other dogs. Yet he will run from the pup.

It's sad and funny at the same time.

Any ideas why?

Exactly, My Dobe 's cage was to big so I cut it down by installing a piece of plywood to make it smaller. He only crapped in it 2 or 3 times after that and with-in 2 weeks he was for the most part house broken. Good luck

So far he's doing well. For the most part he knows to do his buisness outside. He's also sleeping through the night...almost.

He develops a new trate every day
Damn he's a cute little guy.

choke chain

Well the little bastard has started bitting. We're using a choke chain on him right now, but that seems to be only mildly effective.

Any suggestions? Would it be because of his teeth coming in?

Pincher chains work better. Whatever the case, don't leave the chain on for months on end, as they can out grow them. Then you gotta cut the fucker, which is fun to get a dog to sit still for.

first of all, spentagn may have reason for the pincher collar, as i have used one... BUT... dont leave it on at all!!!! or a choker!!! you put it on for training only, and you shouldnt have to use it. training is simple..

as for biting, its natural. let him know what he can and cannot bite.. if he touches your skin with teeth then scream like the bitch you are, act like he hurt you... he'll get startled... my dobe bit for quite a while but when all is said and done the annoyance is hardly even remembered by me... another trick, if he goes to bit you, put your hand down his throat... he wants it? let him have it... ALL. choke him with your hand until the gag reflex goes... bitter apple can work or they can like it.

if he chews on something, give him something else that he is allowed to chew on.... he's being a puppy and you gotta make him into a dog.

is this your first dog gymrat?

you'll love boxers. i grew up with them.. let's see.. there was dixie, mugsy, jack, rufus, and milton..

anyway.. he's a pup.. he's going to chew when he plays.. he's going to chew when he's pissed.. he's gonna chew when he's bored.. just make sure you have enough toys for him to chew on so he doesn't chew on the furniture instead..

he's a pup.. he's gonna piss and shit in the house for a while. even after you think he's all trained and leave him alone in the house.. he'll piss and shit for the fun of it.. until he's say 6 months to a year old..

anyway... i actuall think i'm going to get another one soon. a female.

what'd you name it?

oh yeah.. and don't use a choke collar or a pincher collar or any of that shit..

go buy a good book on boxers and a good book on training your dog.. follow what's in there while still remembering to make life fun for him.

peace

Thanks for the Info bro

Have any suggestions on books?

1. it's inhumane
2. only ignorant fools use that shit
3. every book you ever read on training a dog says not to use one
4. you can train a dog just as well if not better without it
5. i have trained dogs better without it

the only time i could see using a choke / pincher (whatever it's called.. the one with the teeth that bite into their neck) collar, is when it's a dog that 1-2 y/o, raised by someone else, already set in its ways, and poses a danger to yourself or others.. period

The chain is not used to the exent to hurt the dog, it's used as a phyisical correction.

But i'm new to the puppy game, so I have a lot to learn.
