new guy on the block says hi..

Sup everyone, a new member here. A friend of mine told me about this site so i thought why not give it a try. Just wanna say hey to everyone and that your ganna be seeing me around here more often. Well anyways... this is a nice discussion board you guys have going on here... well got to run... ill come back later on to tell you a little about myself. peace.
 
Hi and welcome. There are some amazing people on these boards, you can learn a lot from them. I'm still learning everytime I stop by.
 
hey Backlash and Serea. Thanks for the reply... boy that was fast heh. Well anyways a little about me as I promised: I am 17 years old, used to play football last year (11th grade). Played as linemen.. used to be 218 pounds about 3 months ago. People made fun of me cause of my weight alot and thought I was stupid just because I was a fat kid who played football... well anyways.. same crap that all fat kids go through in high school. anyways one day I just decided that I was ganna change blah blah blah.... so here I am today at 170 LBS 3 months later. Didn’t starve myself, didn’t take any pills, and didn’t go on Adkins or any "diet". Just had a little talk with my biology teacher and that was pretty much it. She told me to just limit my portions i.e. eat less, lay off the coke (the drink, not cocaine.. hehe) and put an end to my addiction to chocolate. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that I did cardio maybe 3 - 4 times a week for about an hour. Well there you have it, if you have anything to ask please feel free. I’ll be back later on to check this thread and to explain my goals and questions. To those who actually read my boring thread - I would like to thank you. Peace.
 
That's amazing weight loss. Congrats! I'm fighting the battle of the bulge myself. I just got a treadmill, so I'm doing 3 days a week of that, in between my workout days.

Make sure to check out the sticky thread above called "training methods".
 
Well thanks for clearing that up Serea, and devastation thank you very much for your reply. I was actually going to post a question on that topic. Do you guys think I should continue to lose some more weight until I reach my goal weight (160 LBS) and then start bulking? Or should I just start bulking right away?

kingc_79, unfortunatly i have no idea. I mean the last time my coach got my body fat i was 218 and it said 27 % (he used one of those machines that send a small shoch or something) well anyways... you guys know where i can buy one? and how much are they?

Welcome to the boards! I'm guessing that you are talking about bioelectrical impedence. Save your money and don't buy one. They are inaccurate. You can do a search and find more info about them. You'd be better off just having someone take skinfold measurements which offer a little better accuracy.

Not the family doc. :) Try a local health club. Most personal trainers should have a clue how to perform the skinfold measurements. Remember I said "most". Ask around and find someone with experience. The 7-site measurement is popular so make sure they are familar with the 7 sites. The health and physical education dept. at a nearby university would also have students that could do this for you.

that will give you a pretty good base of knowledge!
also read all of polishammer1977 training logs and ask louden swain how you need to eat.

do this and your set for life, at least thats what i'm trying to do.
 
hey man glad to see a fellow over weight person take charge of their life i used to have the same problem now the kids who made fun of me wont say a thing!! Good luck w/ your goals you will learn alot on here you an never kno enough about this sport!!!
 
Hey! Welcome to the board! I've learned tons of stuff already and everyone here is really awesome...you'll get to know them pretty quickly :) If you ever have a question there's almost a 100% chance that someone here will have an answer.

As to your weight-loss/bulk question, your goal should be to get to a relatively low bf% (find out with a 7-site test like pwr_machine said) before you start bulking. this way you'll be much less likely to gain back too much fat, and when it comes time to cut it'll be that much easier.
Congratulations on the fat loss by the way, that's a really great number for three months!

My suggestion would be to switch your diet (if you're not already on one like this) to a high-protein/high-fat/low-carb diet. Maybe a Ketonic diet would be best for you... ?

I've recently changed my diet to high-p/f low-carb with the help of a few really great guys on the board and it's been working really well for me so far. I've found that fat-gain is not even a concern, even when bulking, and I'm told that muscle-gain is great.

My advice is to check out any posts by BodyByFinaplix, bfold, Spatts, and Lord_Suston...these guys really know what they're talking about and I've learned tons from them (Thanks guys!!).

Good luck with everything and keep your drive...sounds like you've done great so far!

Welcome to the board. I've been in your shoes. I used to be a fat kid at school and lost a lot of weight rapidly.

There's a lot to knowledge to soak up. Its addictive :)

We were all in your shoes at one time. Looking for information and soaking it up like sponges. In fact, I can assure you that we're all still learning something new everyday.
 
Welcome, brother. Do you plan on playing ball in the fall or in college? How tall are you? As for training and eating, you came to the right place. Just tell a little more about your goals and I am sure you will get plenty of good advice.
