New Clean Diesels??????

So as far as I'm concerned I'm almost 100% convinced my next car will be a honda with the new clean diesel they are going to offer starting in 2009. However, one thing that puzzles me when doing online searches and reading message boards is why people think Diesel engines require more maintenance. Besides using an anti geling liquid in cold weather, I would think there would be LESS maintenance. Diesels in general have about half the parts as a gasser, so what gives?

I can't wait for 45 mpg AND screaming torque. AWESOME.

LOL....yeah screaming torque until about 20mph.

Seriously, I love my Jetta diesel. It's been a great car. Runs strong, and smooth even on used veggie oil, and averages over 40mph even with my lead foot.

older diesels used to be a pain in the ass to fix, hence the rep

newer diesels are quite good

I've heard the same thing. Apparently gone are the days of lag in acceleration, black soot billowing out of the tailpipe, etc. I've seen a clip of the honda accord diesel on the autobon and it cruised along for hours and hours at about 90 MPH and it screams off the line as well. I could really get into lots of torque and I could make it to work on 1 gallon of fuel. Not bad.

Rotten - I've looked at the TDI but have heard they are very tempermental and that VW has some serious transmission issues. Have u had any of those issues? If I could get the golf with hondas diesel in it, it would be my perfect vehicle. Oh yeah and get it fully loaded for $20,000. lol Yeah right.

Yeah but diesel cars are more expensive AND the fuel itself costs more than regular gas. SO unless you do like 30 000+ miles/year, it's totally pointless.

What about new clean Vin Diesels?

Yeah, but if they get diesels up over 50mpgs like they're talking about........and with what gas is going to cost in the next year........it may very well amortize the extra cost. It's a valid point though.........you have to calculate roughly how much you're going to drive in one year, estimate your fuel costs......than see if that adds up to greater than the initial cost of the vehicle. My dad was looking into a prius for my mom to lease.....but at "current" gas prices......the extra lease cost over 3 years over a reg corrolla or camry was greater than what they would pay in gas.....so not worth it...........yet.

I have a long commute to work (50 miles each way) so I do drive a lot. A diesel is IMHO an ideal vehicle for long commutes. Also, the gas thing is a typical comment made by you gassers :P Lets say gas is $3 a gallon and Diesel is $3.50 a gallon and I have a 16 gallon tank in each car. I'll use my current honda gas honda at 30 mpg.

Gasser - 16 gallons at $3 a gallon = $48.
16 gallons at 30 mpg = 480 miles per tank.

Diesel - 16 gallons at $3.50 a gallon = $56.
16 gallons at 52 mpg = 832

Thats 352 MORE milesout of ONE tank. The new honda says it's real world MPG is 52 mpg and since I my drive is 97% freeway it is a perfect vehicle for me. Now I know real world miles may not be the 52 they claim but even at 46 mpg it's close to double the miles out of 1 tank. So in reality I can get almost twice as many miles out of a tank, and that means one less trip to the gas station. A 4 banger diesel performance is signifigantly more than a gasser and a diesel engine usually lasts much longer than a gas counterpart.

IMHO a clean diesel is the best option for this country. You automatically get roughly 35% better fuel economy right out of the gate, they are better for the environment, you get excellent performance and longevityout of a diesel engine and the infrastructure is already there nationwide. Add to that the ability to create biodiesel like we actually can, I can't see a reason NOT to buy one.
But I'm a bit biased. lol

We get around 35mpg from our Yaris Liftback and the car is insanely cheap to buy. What other diesel would be so cheap to buy ?

Anyway I have a very short commute to work (5 miles) so a diesel car is totally useless for me.

Isn't Volvo supposed to come out with a new diesel in '09??? supposed to be awesome on mileage

gas is predicted to top out over $4 this summer..........all of you are going to wish you had a diesel that for a small investment you could modify to run on vegetable oil.

I looked into that and in my area, resturants are now charging people to take their oil away. They caught on and aren't giving it away for free and even lock it up at night. Too bad. I keep holding out for the biodiesel from algae. If that could work, it would answer all our problems with regard to fuel.

They already have a bunch of them in Europe. Same with every company including Chrysler and Ford lol Thing is, Diesel is a cheaper than gas out there, most peeps arent afraid of manual gearbox and cars and they sell clean diesel unlike us. I had a rental Citroen C5 HDi last summer, nice car, looked like an Impala but a lot better and with more features. But who's willing to pay $10k more than a Chevy for a diesel french car ?

clean diesel? diesel is the shit gas left from making unleaded.. how is that clean?

I don't understand why nobody has looked into making diesel or turbine electrics. Especially turbines as their efficiency is almost 90% vs. internal combustion engines which are in the mid 20's for the "best" of them. I would think a turbine acting as a generator for an electric vehicle would work pretty darn well no? All trains running today are diesel electrics.

Because that would make sense and we'll have none of that!

What restaurants? Chains, independents? What? Look for the little mom & pop chinese restaurants. Oil never used for deep frying is much better for fuel anyway, and none of the little Chinese joints around here are trying to charge for it. And even if they do, you might be talking as much as a dollar a gallon to lug away their oil. You'll still have thousands of dollars in the end.
