Need serious help, putting a dog to sleep...

I have a dog who is about 2 years old now. I got him from the SPCA. He was just fine and I have spent alot of money on him. He had red mange and I spent like $300 to get it fixed. Now he has a social problem. He barks at the slightest things. If he ears a truck coming down the road he'll start barking at it. He bites everyone that comes over and just recently he bit my cat. He is very nervous all the time, when he sleeps he only half sleeps. If someone walks by him he'll jump up and bite them. There is nothing I can do to fix it, I've tried. I have to either decide to put him to sleep or just take care of him like he is. I love my dog, and he always keeps me company, but he's getting to be too much of a hassle and a threat to the neighborhood. I'm afraid he'll kill one of my cats these days or get out and bite some little kid. What should I do?

Well, that depends if you want serious or non-serious advice? I take it you want the former.

First of all, you have a legal responsibility to guests you have in your home and the general public (if you take a dog on a walk)... knowing that it may bite people at any time and letting people be around the dog is dead wrong. I know you love you dog dude, but think if you take your dog for a walk and it attacks and maimes a little kid... not only will the dog be forceable destroyed, but you'll be held criminally and civilily liable... not to mention the guilt you'll feel over the injured person.

Do the right thing. Put it to sleep.

Either that, or enter it into "Dog Wars" -- a European version of "Robot Wars"

I'm thinking....

Talk to your vet (maybe call some) about an animal behaviorist. Maybe someone who specilaizes in animal behavior problems can help you or tell you where you can find the dog a home. Maybe it isn't a cat or lots of people dog.

I had a dalmation once who was a complete spaz. He would jump on everyone and if I opened the door, he would take off running. One day he got out and was hit (not killed) by a car. It freaked me out. Anyway, it was hard for me but I found my dog a home in the country where he could run and not have a bunch of comotion. He even had a girl dalmation. It was better for him and his personality. :)

my aunt's dog was like that and their vet put it on dog prozac or some other SSRI, i forget. it worked well for their dog, you might want to try it.

The dog doesnt just attack anyone, he will just bark. Usually he is just scared and nervous, if someone went up to him he would run away. But if they turned their back on my dog, the dog runs up and bites them. When I have him on a leash it is just fine, unless someone trys to run up and pet him. I don't think my dog would ever hurt me... even when he play rough he just play fights, he never draws blood...

Would it be moral too put him to sleep and get another dog? I really don't want to, I have a bond with my dog...

Try finding him a different home or environment. Not every dog is suited for every environment. Talk to your vet.

There are other options.

Moral? Probably not. If there isn't any other way to control your dog, then I'd put it to sleep. It seems the dog is getting worse (from what you've said)... I doubt it'll get any better as the dog gets older

The dog was only like a month or two old when I got him. He was tiny. I KNOW what happen actually, it was my fucking brother. My brother tried to pet him but the dog didnt know him and was scared of him. Then my brother chased him all around the house and trapped him and tried to pet him. The dog bit his finger off and bit so hard he broke his jaw. Ever since he's been scared as hell of people he doesnt know...

take him out back and shoot him with a small caliber rifle or pistol at the base of the skull where the spinal chord and skull meet, aiming down towards his mouth. painless and instant.

damn bro that happened to me my dog bit my sister and i had to put it to sleep that was the hardest thing i could do but i have had that dog sence i was 3 and i was 14 when i put it to sleep

Antifreeze works real well. He will just drink it up happily then go to sleep forever. No guts or gore like shooting him.

butr if he does that then he will have to think about that time when he walks by the dogs grave

But it would be easier than pulling the trigger. No matter how you do it it may bother you a little. If you have to put an animal down then you have to put one down. I had to kill my hamster once when I was a child, it bit my sister. It was not his fault, she had no business painting his toenails. After many years though I got over it. Too bad humans cannot be thought of in the same light.
