Need help with bench press form.

I am tall and have really long arms. Should I bring the bar down and touch my chest or should I bring it down till my elbows are at a 90 degree angle?( there is like a 4 inch difference) My friend said to have my elbows at a 90 degree angle because last time I tried to do a lot of weight I hurt my shoulder a little, so I did my new maximum and I want to know if it counted.

if it hurts your shoulders then stop its not worth a blown rotator cuff. if you're not planning on competing then stop at 90 degrees, it will still be a good workout

oh and also, as you build shoulder strength, u should keep striving to keep perfect form. perhaps try a lighter weight for a while first.

i have long arms also but this has been no obstacle to me in achieving a good bench.listen, take just the bar its self and lay down on the bench and take the bar down under control all the way down untill it touches the chest.in this position experiment with the width of your hand grip spacing on the bar, remember it just you, the bar, and the bench.find firstly the spacing that feels most comfortable to you bio mechanicaly and note this carefully.now take the bar down under contol to your chest but imagine now that you have the bar loaded with your top weight and arrange the hand spacing and your body position so that feel you can achieve maximum force output for a single lift, note the position of hands and body.what you now have is the spacing for maximum out put, and spacing for mechanical comfort, work between both to achieve a happy medium.if you lifted the new maximum under control then i would say it counted, but focus now on surpassing it.surprising as it may seem by taking just a bar and benching it untill you can smoothly bench it in the correct grove for you will greatly add to your max bench just as it did for me,good luck.

one thing that helped my shoulder pain was making sure to bring to my elbows in
not the most effective for comp bench type lifting, but since that is not my goal it has allowed me to keep plugging away
