Need help from the computer geeks...

On the rare occasion that I try playing a game on my comp, it will play for a while, and then my computer will just turn off midway through the game. Any idea why this may be happening?? I'm thinking the comp is either overheating, or else it could be my video card (it sucks), but then again, I'm clueless... It isn't overclocked or anything. What can I do to stop this from happening??

Comp stats: HP pavillion laptop, 3.00 gHz processor, 2 GBs RAM, 60GB hard drive + 400GB external drive... questions about anything else, let me know...

Overheating CPU, do you have it over-clocked?

Test it by opening your case and playing the game and see if it still does it.

I read your post more carefully, its likely an overheating CPU, try the open case test, and if so get a fan down at the computer store (like 19 dollars) and strap it over your CPU, could also be the video card over-heating, what brand?

Maybe the cpu is overheating. Mine started doing similar things once. I couldn't be bothered to dismantle it so I just underclocked it from the bios and it ran fine, albeit slower.

Finally, I had time and inclination and took the thing apart. The CPU fan was clogged with dust. I also removed the fan and reapplied some thermal grease. After putting it back together, I restored the proper clock settings and it has run just fine ever since.

OVERHEATING... check to see if the fans are running.. Put it in a well ventilated area and see if it still does that.. if it does you may want to invest in a new fan

The simplest would be to open the case and blow hard on the fan. If you get clouds of dust then finish the job.

oh heck.. saw it was an hp... = overheating.. jk.. not really.. most are build for office environments.. not gaming..

go with a new computer, get the duel core lowest you can, and tear it up.. the multi thread and different architecture make frames move allot better.

the video card is not causing the problem, but is adding heat..

good luck..

NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200. Stock (i.e. came w/ computer). I thought about getting a cooling unit, but wanted to get a few opinions first...

Fan is running, but then again... it is ALWAYS running. Cooling unit... Do they work??

Not an option right now. I'm a student, and poor. This is what I have to work with, so I gotta deal with it. It is one of the widescreen, entertainment laptops, so I know it is meant to deal with more than just office B.S.. Thing is a fukkin tank to haul around, but I got it cuz it is more of a "desktop replacement" than anything else...
