Neck Surgery

Been having some neck pain with some mild left hand numbness. Went see the neuro dr. Got an MRI , revealed some bulging disc with spurs maybe pressing on some nerves. Said I need surgery, anterior cervical fusion (ACF). Anyone had this and knows about the recovery.

I know I would get a few more opinions before surgery.

I hear from many that while running GH there is some associated hand numbness. Anyone hear of this. I'm thinking that could be part of the problem.
I won't let them cut on me that easy, I'll seek other opinions, but hand numbness is scary shit. Still training hardcore with no limits right now.

ACF seems serious. If they fuse(basically weld) your vertebre together it I think it would be a long recovery. Like I said, i am not sure this would be my guess. I would get a second opinon as suggested

Masters bodybuilder at my gym had surgery for the same thing. He couldn't do heavy squats for over a year. He ended up doing lots of lunges and deadlifts, and still ended up taking home 3 first place trophies in the Arkansas Classic. It is good advice to get a second opinion, Bro.

One of my clients had neck surgery 3 times, the first 2 were failed attempts. I can't even begin to explain the whole story.

All in all, he did well, recovered fully within 6 months, started light cardio under doctor supervision. Then went to full training.

I had a friend in the military you got injured on a jump and needed ACF and they fucked him up. He ended up getting kicked out because of it (he got a decent pay check and disability which was good for him and his family).

I didn't want to throw this in to scare you but make sure your doc is on top of his shit and get a second and THIRD opinion before going in for surgery for this. Surgery should be a LAST resort. You never know but maybe some decent physical therapy will set you straight.

Good luck.

I don't know how severe your problem is but you may want to look into physical therapy and chiropractic care as well....

Surgey should be the last resort...if the physician hasnt remomended therapies or meds well the he is just cut happy.

Try searching www.activereleasetechnique.com This is a great muscle work that can help with nerve impingement.

Also search for some physicain that does Spinal Decompression, this decompresses the spine and takes pressure of the nerve and cord.

In all honesty if everyone had an MRI, 70% would have a bulging/herniated disc and bone spurs.

Had something similar done, and consider it pretty successful. BUT.... Don't count on working out for a few months at least. I'll bet you that the Doc will tell you that "No post recovery physical therapy is needed." That's what they told me, but I was weak like a baby for a year after the surgery. I've never returned to what I was before, unfortunately. If they offer PT, take it. That will at least whip you back into some form of shape after the surgery. :worried: Good luck, if you have any ???s you can always PM me.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the input. I'm still training with no impairments. Just mild numbness to left hand/thumb worse at night. I'm still not ruling out carpal tunnal or possible side affect of GH. Remember, we have the technology to rebuild him....bigger....faster.... stronger!

I had my neck fused in 2003. I herniated C5-6-7, walking around now with a titanium plate in my neck forever. I was laid up for 2 years, not a fun surgery

Definitely get a second and third opinion. Neck pain sometimes can be resolve with a PT or Chiropractor. Two months ago, I tripped and hit my right Knee with the corner edged of my living room table (right on). It hurt like hell. The following week, my right toes and a big part of my foot were completely paralyzed, I was having a hard time walking. PT did help and I'm fully recovered. Nerves take a while to heal. Good luck, and take some antiflmatory like Naproxen. :worried:

Do some research on your surgeon, how many cases like this he has done in the past, his rate of infection, what he considers to be a success vs. what you would deem to be a success. Also talk to him about the recovery period. If it is already bulding then there is a good chance that you could rupture it if not properly treated. If this happens then it could (not saying that it will) cause permanent damage. But don't be afraid to talk to him about these things. Remember, he works for you.

what do you do for work? My job is known to cause carpel tunnel, I wake up with my hands asleep all the time. Your job may be a contributing factor. Any repetitive motion can do damage to your nerves.

Hey bro, bulging disks and bone spurs have nothing to do with repetitive motion. Read his post.

You got me nervous man, my neck has been hurting pretty bad for 2 weeks. There are no signs of it feeling better either. The last thing I want is surgery.

I had it. My left arm couldn't curl a 15 pound DB and my delt vanished. It was a weird sensation the first time I discovered it. I had no real pain but one day I went to do a preacher curl with my left arm after doing my right and I couldn't move the dumbbell. I looked at it. It was the right weight. hmm. Try again. Nope it won't move. WTF? Ok, let me try a lighter one. Nope, I can't curl it. WTF? Try a 25. Holy shit I can't move it off the pad.
Well I was pretty concerned at this point but clueless as to what was going on. My C5 and herniated and cut off the nerves to my arm. My head was say lift but the muscle wasn't getting the signal. I don't go to the doctor much so it was Macrophage that told me what was probably going on. Paralysis is one of those ailments that will make a guy see a doctor. So I went and had the MRI and nerve tests. Later I was scheduled for surgery and had C5 fused and a titanium plate screwed in. See photo below.

The magic that healed a fusion that would have normally taken 6 months in a little over 30 days was GH and deca. My neurosurgeon was mystified that the xray below didn't show signs of a crack anymore between the fusion points. Like I said this usually takes 6 months.

I am fine now but I can't set a bar back there anymore for squats. That's most likely the cause of the herniation.

Below you will see as X-ray. This is my neck last Wednesday, six weeks post surgery to have my vertebra fused. You will see a titanium plate with the screws holding two vertebras together with a bone in-between them. So the vertebra and bone look like ]
I have inserted two arrows where the lines between the bone that was borrowed from a dead guy and my vertebra meet. The idea is that my bone will eventually adhere to the inserted bone, fuse together with it, and over time it will be replaced entirely with my own bone material.
Now if you look where the arrows are you will see white lines where the bones have already fused. These lines should be black cracks between the inserted bone and my bone because the bones can't fuse this much in 6 weeks. This takes between 6-12 months. My surgeon was astonished when he saw this X-ray. Until I told him that for two weeks prior to the surgery and for the past 6 weeks I was taking GH. He told me in all the time he's been practicing he had never seen anything like this.
It is appalling that the FDA only approves GH for AIDS and growth disorders.

How much GH were you taking? I had L3 t11 fusion because of an L1 burst fracture and have lost mad strength in my calves. I wonder if GH is the best way for me to go. Do you think it has any effect on nerve growth?
