I know I asked this a while back, but do you think firewalls are necessary for a home pc? Just had a ZoneAlarm trial version expire and I'm trying to decide whether to get one or not. Any thoughts will help.

1st and foremost, get virus protection.

2nd, ask yourself why you would need a firewall? Is there stuff on your PC that sensitive that would attract interest of the hacker community? Probably not. You're a micro-organism in a huge ocean. That being said, if it makes you sleep at night get one. I think a firewall appliance (which is better than software firewalls IMO) only cost $100 or so.

I agree, I don't use one at the home because there's is nothing on there that anyone would want. I run an antivirus and keep it updated. Other then that, I don't believe in firewalls for the home.

While I agree that most hackers don't look to Joe end user's PC for kewl stuff, they often crack into other peoples machines for temp storage of stolen info, or use it as relay point when trying to crash corporate routers and switches.

Like the guys above said most people don't want to take anything from your computer, they just want to use it as a tool. Then there are those bored 12 year olds that will just try and infect your home PC because they are bored. Farging bastages.

OK seriously. Virus software is covered. And you're right of course, I have nothing on my machine *extensive porn collection* that anyone would want. I just bought a house recently and what would make me sleep better is not spending money that I don't have to.
