I don't know why I continue to suffer through these jackasses fucking everything up. Their "experiments" (if you can call them that) usually prove nothing. They don't use any proper scientific method, they give up too easy, they change parameters at will to infuence the outcome the way they want it. And now they are just making shit up to keep their lame show going.

I just saw it while I am marooned here in northern wyoming in the hotel room.

End rant.

I think they do a good amount of the scientific stuff and enough fluff to keep it entertaining.
Shooting guns to see how far the bullet travels under water was pretty good. Who woulda thought the 50 cal would shatter on impact.
 
They never use control groups, they never check precision only accuracy which they don't even do right. Also they do nothing to eliminate error or correct outside influence.

Water is a very unforgiving medium.

I enjoy their show when I watch it. I take it as pure entertainment with some slight intellegence to it comparitively speaking to what else is on the boob tube.

The DUI testing was a funny one.

The windows down or up and gas economy was interesting.

The tailgate up or down affecting gas econmy was also interesting.

Samurai sword slicing was cool.

Dang, I got a brain cramp accessing all that :rolleyes:

They are studio stunt builders, not a whole lot more than that.

Along the lack of scientific method, no statistics are taken during the show.

Like a couple questionable dudes fucking around in a giant garage.

My dad was a demolitions guy in the army, hence I know how to blow things up using just about anything lying around the house. Our father son talks included setting ambushes and using dead bodies to create shape charges. I had an awesome childhood.

I surmise that A/C is better over 50 mph.

They could use a lot more scientific rigor. That would appeal to 10% of the population max in my opinion.

People just want entertainment and something easy to watch and understand.

no, but he brought home a lot of playmates for me. then one day they'd just be gone and i'd be sad but my dad would sleep for days and days until he'd go out and get me another one.

It is a balance between rigor, entertainment, and practicality.
 
I hate the show. It is pure stupidity.

Now if they used real people, like the homeless or prison inmates, in their little stunts THAT would be worth watching. I'd love to see some dirtbag get put in a huge slingshot and launched a few thousand feet. Better yet, give him some plywood and stick him on top of the Sears building and see if he can float to the ground.

Set up the experiment in a controled lab environement even if it is done in miniature. Then using a standardized techinique you create and recreate the conditions that will knowingly cause combustion. Then hypothesize the outcome under real world conditions then do multiple test to show the repeatability (precision) of the experiment under different conditions.

That is the creation of a control for that experiment. You don't just get some group to come out with a bunch of mirrors spread pitch on a boat and hope it ignites. There isn't anything that is impossible to do or creat a control for, just may be implausible.

umm...they did that.

The issue what that the life scale mirrors could not be concentrated into a small enough area to cause ignition.

Not really I watched that show, they half assed it like they do everything else. They didn't put any real time or effort into it, and certainly did nothing to show the repeatability. Also they always skew the experiments to either bust or confirm them to their personal tastes.
