Myth?? New exercises shock your muscles

I have never been under the impression that you can "shock your muscles into new growth and confuse your muscles". However, so many people have been talking about this recently and i really don't want to believe that it's true. I always thought progressive overload and a good diet is the best plan for growth, but maybe i am wrong?

Any ideas?
 
Yes good diet and progressive overload is the key but of course you need to change it up to "shock" your muscles. If you do only 3x3 every week you will stall out within a couple weeks and stop gaining.
 
New exercises will create new variety and chances are will create new growth just by adding new excitement to the workouts. Fresh routines will give the body the opportunity to exhaust a muscle group differently.
and example of that would be say adding squats at the end of a workout instead of near the beginning.
