My Leg's from Leg Pressing only!

I herniated 3 disk over ten years ago. Broke my left knee in 2 places 3 years ago. Plus I am 45 years old. You can build great leg's from leg pressing. Muscle only responds to stress created. Muscle does not know what exercise your doing. It takes me 1 hour to an 1.5 hours to train quads. 20-30 minutes warm up (leg press). then 5-8 working sets leg pressing once a week. My stats. 6'0", 220lb, body fat, well really low. An example of my workout for quad's would be, warm up 1 plate per side 20 rep per set increasing 1 plate each set. 8 plates 30-40 reps, 9 plates 20-30, 10 plates 17-25, 11 pltes sets of 12-15. Back down to 8 plate 2 sets of 20. There are different variance's to my workout this is just one example were I choose to use 8 plates a side for my first set. A may choose 9 plates a side for my first set, in this case 8 would be in the warm up range and my rep range at 9 plus plates would be extended probably in the 4-8 range per set. I may choose 7 plates as my first set and try to push for 50 reps! then 8 for 20-30 and so forth on. Either way the intensity level of this training forces quad development. Oh and I'm a classic ectomorph. My nutrition and supplementation are spot on.

WOW nice wheels brother esp on presses alone. Low BF your...lol..you ass. Your abs are veiny...r you competing??

Do you do different fee positions on the press machine?

Good to see, bro. I've been battling some lower back pain for some time now and I feel like my legs are never gonna grow because of it!

a new guy came to work legs with us one day
after we hit heavy squats, he wanted to do 2 sets of 25 with 7 plates on each side
the high reps burned like nothing else

props to you for doing so many reps, its a painful experience
you legs looked jacked too

i think we will try this

I have to say very impressive and proves that squats are not the only mass builder for legs.
Leg press has been my staple for a while due to the fact that standing squats causes me extreme tendon pain just above the knee.
Don't know why just came out of nowhere.
I've read about certain IFBB pros that use nothing but leg press for building leg mass also.
Obviously it works looking at your results.

so no ext/curl or calf work? just leg press? my legs are definately frustrating i guess ill try something new

Dude, 4 posts since you joined in 2001. You probably have a ton of additional knowledge. Please feel free to post more. I for one would be interested in reading what you have to say.
Your legs look great too.

exactly what i needed to hear. even light squats are starting to cramp my lower back, even with good form. i love them leg presses though. might be time to go all out.

I've been doing leg presses as well since I have chronic back problems. My legs are growing steadily, but I'm not liking my thighs rubbing together when I walk!

I think this is an EXCELLENT post and I agree 1000%

I found Leg Presses and Smith squats to be superior for Leg Isolation and mass

buy smith squats are you referring to front squats or hack?

nice quads
I stopped doing squats this past year as the 500lbs rep reps thing wrecked my body...I have been using hacks, extensions, and peg press, and I was really surprised to see that my quads improved
That being said, I still think that if you can squat, then they should still be a part of a quad routine

Squats are one of THE overall mass builders for the entire body, no doubt. But I for one don't buy into the whole idea that if you don't squat or do deads that you're never gonn aget anywhere.I did squate and 3/4 deas up until a year ago or so maybe. I have a natural arch to my back like you don't know. It's caused minor problems through the years, nothin major though. I di have an odd shape in that resoect though. I herniated a disc some years back and eventually made my way back to squats and deads, workin my way up again and paying careful attention to form (trust me, once you fuck up a disc you're SO cautious). Wanting to experiment, I stopped using the 3/4 deads and stopped squatting (did hacks though). The minor aches and pains that always seemed to be a part of the game for me are gone and I have not had to my chiropractor for a tune up in a good long time. So I guess the moral of the story is, squats are truely a great exercise, but they're not essential to sculpting a great physique. IMO, they're over-hyped to some degree. Or should I say how you're "missing out" if you don't do them, is an overhyped notion.

Squats ARE overhyped to some degree, but for good reason. When there's people looking to get into lifting they are better off starting with nice deep squats than just leg pressing. Of course, as the squat weight becomes dangerous and complications arrise with your back or knees, there is more reason to legpress.

For athletes, they're a great exercise. For bodybuilders, they're not necessary. Bodybuilders need to achieve hypertrophy and avoid injury. Both are easy to do without squats.

The beautiful thing about a gym is all the different machines free weights and smith machines. I have a friend who is a powerlifter and only does squat. I on the other hand dont buy into that.I had a total hip replacement at 21 years old do to 3 years of chemotherapy. I am most comfortable with leg presses and hack squats. I can do squats but why bother with the risk of many injuries not now but later in life. I talked to an expowerlifter who has 3 fused discs in neck shoulder replacement surgery and two total rebuilt knees for what you ask a box full of trophies in the basement. Remember nobody cares what you use to do they are only interested in what you are doing know. I dont like to consider myself a bodybuider vbut a weight lifter who wants to do this for life. I fucked my body up so much when i was younger that i can barely move now when i most need it i have to wrap my knees and so forth. Dont let that be you ,lift safe lift smart lift for life. Anybody who reads this dont go to the gym for an ego trip go to advance your body and mind. Choose your exercises correctly fellow lifters.peace
