my laptop screen needs help..

My laptop monitor/screen blacked out and I'm using a regular pc monitor hooked up to it. I have gotten a lot of comments that it was the back lights that blew out since if I put a flashlight up to the screen I can barely make out what's on it (hence, there's nothing wrong with the screen itself but the lighting inside of it) When I turn my computer on, it usually blinks red then blacks out. Sometimes, it will actually stay on with a clear color like the monitor actually works and nothing's wrong with it. Then it eventually dies about by flickering a bit. Does anybody know some options of how to fix this or a cheap way of handling it?
I've gone down to a place where they fix them, but it'd cost around 800$ just to get it fixed, so I'm not going that route

Their are some companies that can replace blacklights, but you are pretty much screwed. Laptops are virtually impossible to get fixed for less than the replacement costs. Wish I could say better :-(
