I live in a small town and go to a gym that opened about four years ago. It's better than what you would expect to find in a town of this size and has all the basics, BUT I just went to my friends gym in the city a couple of days ago and DAMN, my gym sucks!

Three different cardio rooms; one with 15" plasmas on each machine for dvds and TV, one with about 15 flat screens all over one wall, and one cinema style room where all the equipment faces one large cinema screen and they play movies all day. I don't even want to talk about the free weights and hammer strength.

The best part is, its less than what I pay for my membership. It's about a 1.5 hour drive from my home and I would damn near consider making the trip.

The peace and quiet of the country v.s. the resources in the city

Membership rates will probably go up due to all that unnecessary equipment. Plus driving 3 hrs every otherday will be expensive w/ the gas you have to spend. And will you really use all the stuff in there? Personally I would just stay at the old gym.

stay at your old gym. trust me. a lot more convienant

why would you need plasma TV's in a gym? The most I want is a few TV's with a game or two on that I can glance at every now then....headphones are key anyway :magilicut

The fuel costs make any commute not feasible. At 13 mpg, I'd spend a fortune getting from one place to the other. I just like having the options, whether I use them or not.

Oh well...fug it

ok basics time here:

does your gym have a squat rack?
benches?
a good selection of dumbells?

if so, then stay where you are. the flashy gyms attract "flashy" people who will get in your way.

you will probably have to listen to crap music as well.

stay where you are

My gym is a chain, they have around 15 places around my town... some closer some farther away... with my luck, the one closest (about 10 min drive) is the oldest. The ones farthest are the newest and more "digitalized"...

go figure, I prefer to drive 10 minutes instead of 30 min... all I need is a decent free-weights area and an ellyptical or threadmill... I bring my own music, so screw tvs and internet...

In my opinion, the more gymicks you need, the less focused you are in what you are doing

best gyms =

lots of racks

fewest fuckheads to bother me

close by

cheap

no trainer douches to bother me for making lots of racket

All valid points. 95% of my lifts are centered around free weights of which we have a good selection. I use my MP3 all the time, so fuck the music selection (ours sucks anyway).

And your right, all the other bullshit would probably just get in the way. BUT, I wouldn't mind seeing a half decent piece of ass in my gym every once in a while. I'm sure all the extra shit would get old and now that I think of it, the place was packed and I don't think I've ever had to wait for equipment in my gym.

Each side of the table has benefits.

I don't judge gyms by their equipment. I judge them by the women that go to them!

Then mine would fall at the bottom of your list...which goes back to my largest complaint.
