My girlfriend will not listen

As I am sure alot of you know when somebody tells you something enough times and you see results from their advice....it is hard to believe they are wrong.

My girlfrend was at one time a big girl but with the help of a trainer she lost 50 pounds. She lost this weight by using what I believe to be an unhealthy eating routine that allows her NO CARBS AFTER NOON. Now, she has been experiencing headaches and tiredness at night, hunger pains in the morning, etc.

For the past two weeks she has started on a plan that allows her some carbs at supper time - she put on 4 pounds (SHE SAYS) and now out of fear wants to return to her previous diet.

What advice would you give someone in her position.....I cannot seem to get through that as long as she has a healthy/balanced diet, exercises regularly(especially in the morning), drinks at least 8 glasses of water a day.....she will be OK. Am I wrong? Is the trainer right.....should women not have carbs after noon?

get a new girlfriend... j/k

your best advice to her would be to keep her calories below her maintenance level 12xbw. As a personal preference i only eat carbs in the morning and around my training... I also don't eat any carbs in my last meal.... but i am not a chick so i cant answer the last part of your question... If she just added more carbs than normal it might be water weight, i will gain 6-8 pounds from friday to monday from the carbs i eat....

I was part of the driving force that has brought her carbs/calories back up. She is currently running at 10xbw, before she was running as low a 7xbw (working to 12). Her current split is 45/25/30 P/C/F. She is not eating carbs as her last meal, just for supper, Meal 6 of 7.

It shouldn't be any kind of a problem as long as her calories are really as low as you say they are. 25% carbs is very low(as long are they are low-glycemic). She just gained a little water weight. Probably filled her muscles in a little, too. Does she look a little more muscular? Try to help her gauge her progress by the mirror and measuring tape.

I agree with Senior and Him1, but I also think losing 50lbs eating 7xBW slowed her metabolism down. Also, What kind and how many grams of carb is she having in the afternoon?
I would try moving her cals up slowly and maybe ask this question on the womens forum, they are very helpful there and have possibly delt with the same thing before.

I agree with the slowing of the metabolism. She is consuming 29 grams of carbs at supper, not much for sure.

She should`nt be gauging her weight but more her BODY FAT %. That will be a true barometer if her "4 pound gain" was getting fatter or getting muscle.

Hell I think any woman would be the same way, they are absolutely obsessed with what the scale says, not even necessarily what their BF% is. If I had lost 50 pounds, I would have a hard time adjusting to something that was putting a little bit of weight back on me. The thing you need to tell her is that she can't eat like that forever, there has to be a transition. Tell her she looks great, encourage her. She will feel better and maintain her new sporty bodyweight if she eats quality complex carbs and watches her total cals. Good luck!

chicks always starve themselves and then they overeat.......thats why girls can be that kind of skinny fat. its cause their dieting techniques suck

We talk about this all the time on the womens board...

One thing to keep in mind is that the vast majority of women (and men for that matter) have used a scale to measure their level of "fitness" growing up. When was the last time your doctor took your BF%age? Mine never did! So we are "programmed" to look at our weight instead of our BF/measurements, etcetera. It's a tough paradigm shift for us to want to "gain," even if it is LBM. The vets on the chick board are great at putting things into perspective for those of us who are newer...so we're trying!

...and we DO know everything! j/k:D

Yea, I know a girl who eats salads all day long then binges on a bag of baked lays/pretzels all night. I tell her thats why shes not making any progress. "OH BUT ITS FAT FREE"...

Her body is probably fucked up like mine, lol. I too have lost alot of weight, 70 pounds in fact, and now my body gains weight FAST. Carbs are not "bad" for me, but I get very bloated if I eat even the right kinds. I lost the weight on the bodyforlife program by the way, which is not low carb. But I did lower the carbs at night and it helped me alot.

Nonerz, I agree with you. We are programmed to look at the scale from the time we are old enough to know. However, as you become educated you begin to realize BF% is what matters. It's a hard cycle to break, but the sooner the better. Keep trying to educate, that's all you can do!

Ok... I'm in the same boat as you...

For some reason girls will listen to everybody else but not there boyfriend.
4 pounds is nothing. I lose that in a run. And unless she has a competition in a coule days or a boxing match where she has to make weight she s a idiot. But most girls are idiots that act this way.
I wish I could tell you, I know where theres a match making website for fitness models and competitors, but I'm not done making it yet. lol

Warn her one more time, tell her whats going to happen to her body if she doesn't diet properly, If she still won't listen, ignore it.

Don't waste your life trying to help someone that doesn't want your help.
I'm sure you have your own body to worry about..

P.S keep your eye out for those fitness girls that know what there doing and will look good for the next 40 - 50 because of it.

I agree with MrStamina...don't waste your time trying to help someone who doesn't want it. The thing is...most chicks do want it! They're just not educated about it. I am the first one to tell you that I don't consider myself to be a nutritional wizard, that's for sure. But I do ask a lot of questions, try the suggestions given to me, and I work hard in the gym. I've been able to make better decisions with the help of a lot of people...most importantly, myself.

Fitness girl or not, I plan on looking even better in the next 40-50+ years! :bikinimom

I think people like to be told exactly what to do in terms of diet and training, they want it to be a no-brainer. Everyday in the gym I get asked about something regarding diet or training. What amazes me is that people will take up your time with questions and not listen to your advice. I will talk to anyone about training, diet, etc. People tend to want to know every detail, they ask questions that miss the point. That is okay, they are just trying to get more educated and they respect your opinions. When people don't listen to you though......don't waste your time. Their stupidity will bite them in the ass one day.
